Yay I got my 2nd offset!

Post by Vinkie » Sat Feb 03, 2007 7:30 pm

I'm quite new to offsets but when I got my '64 Jaguar last autumn I was hooked quickly. I liked the idea of finding a JM too but my funds were non-existent after getting the Jag. However good fortune struck when a friend offered me his nice and brand-new CIJ Jazzmaster (bought last December at the store I work for) for very little money. I felt weird because I had actually sold him this guitar but he told me he liked his AVRI better anyway and he would rather pass it on to someone who would actually play it. Then the same day I found out I had some savings fund from earlier employment in '03 and '04 which I could access freely. This covered the new JM and some future upgrades as well :D

Overall I’m quite impressed with the overall workmanship. The finishing, although a bit plasticy because it’s spanking new urethane, is faultless. The neck is very nice: regular graining with even some very slight flame/crossgraining all over the neck. It has white dots and a laminated rosewood board, quite dark and evenly grained. I knew the CIJ JM’s are quite nice guitars but often found myself battling with the stock setup with .009 strings which made it hard sometimes to evaluate their playability. When I got mine it was strung with .010s which was a whole lot better although the action was a little high.

I decided I would try it with even thicker strings so I removed the tens to replace them with my favoured Jaguar strings (Ernie Ball .011-.054). The extra load would add more relief so I had to adjust the neck too. I loosened the neck screws and gave the adjuster half a turn. After restringing and tuning up the neck was near straight with just a hint of relief. With the bridge lowered a few mm’s I was able to get a very low action without any buzz. I counted myself lucky to find perfect intonation with the preset I choose for the saddles and no noticeable rattling. After readjusting the tremolo spring I was very pleased with the feel and playability. The PU’s could be better but with the heavy strings the sound is already impressive. Even unplugged it has a very rich and deep voice with nice jangle on top.

I’ll keep this guitar stock for a while but my plan is to upgrade the pickups with Novaks or Lollars and replace all electric parts and wiring. Because I’m not so fond of this pickguard I’ll probably replace it with a gold guard. I can't wait until next rehearsal so I can make some more noise and see how it fits with the band :)

Nice!

They make a good pair. I like the Japanese models a lot.

I love that sunburst!

Nice, maybe I should get a sister for my Jazzmaster too someday! Didn't get the white CIJ JM?

I don't like the guard much either, better than the AVRI guards but still not quite like the old ones. Gold will look awesome on sunburst, but it won't be easy to find a gold guard at a reasonable price, within Europe. (you probably know better than me though)

have fun with it!

Thanks guys! It's fun to play this one next to my Jaguar because they feel and sound so different. The Jag is a bit mellower because of the shorter scale but plugged in it sounds a bit brighter and snarlier. In comparison the JM has fuller mids and basses and feels stiffer because of the longer scale. The neck is also a bit wider but I feel very much at home because it seems to have almost the same proportions and shape as my Jags neck.

This IS the same guitar (and seller) I talked about earlier but somehow I mistakenly remembered I sold him a white one  ::). I like this 3TS too as it's executed well, not at all like a target burst, no nasty grain showing underneath and a good blend between the three tones. As for the gold guard I'll wait and see if Doug's plan to replicate his original guard comes through. If it doesn't I might see if I can get my hands on a Scotland guard sometime.

I'll probably stick with the original hardware: I feel the sound changes with other bridges and/or Mustang saddles and I seem to have no trouble getting the stock bridge to work. If I'll start losing grub screws I'll secure them with superglue. I always set the trems up for downward movement only with tightened spring (so the lock is useless but I don't mind) and with this setup it functions well enough.

Nope... I'll replace those sometime with either Novaks or Lollars. I like the sound of the Lollars in your guitar but because I have my Casino and Riviera for the meatier P90/miniHB tones I'd rather have a brighter sounding Jazzmaster. Methinks the vintage style Novaks are more like that, more rasp so to say. I checked out the test by this guy who posted clips of several JM PU's playing the same riff and it confirmed that same conclusion. Whatever my final decision I'm sure it will sound better than the stock PU's, which I have to say aren't THAT horrible at all  8)

Novaks will definitely be an improvement, I know at least his Tele pups are great. I think you'll get sick of those standard pickups in time, especially when you try them with distortion pedals.

I had a sunburst CIJ JM for a little while about a year ago, the paint job is indeed very good.

have you made pictures of all your guitars together? I'd like to see them, there's probably an appropriate thread somewhere to post it.
