I like that.  But I'd have to play it in a 70's avocado green kitchen, whilst wearing a Pucci-print halter jumpsuit with bell-bottom legs and a headband.

Damn, busted.  :-[  ;)

I used to have a 70's kitchen, but it was "harvest gold" and not avocado:

No Starcaster. I never thought there was one...the guys at Pittsburgh Guitars AND myself have a PICKGUARD for an Antigua Starcaster.
Then the on in the post above showed up.

Amazing.

Maybe the pickguards come from - ugh - refinished Starcasters. That was the "scrape off the finish" 1970s, remember. The thought of scraping the finish off a Starcaster creeps me out, but it's very possible that someone thought it was a great idea.

By the way, I  :-* the Antigua Starcaster. Thanks for those pics. And I like the look of it on the Jag, too, though I agree that black pups would look cooler.

I'm not so keen on the Strats and Teles in Antigua, but it somehow seems to work on the Jag.

But yes, the Antigua JM. There must be one out there somewhere. There must...

Fender made a few in the 60's, his was an original one.

The influence for Antigua, no doubt.
I have seen quite a few comments (especially on the FDP) where various people have stated that the finish of Costello's Jazzmaster was in fact a (factory) custom colour by Fender, but so far I've never seen any evidence for this, and I actually believe that his Jazzmaster's finish was certainly not factory-original.
I also don't believe that 'Marlinburst' is an official name for the guitar's finish from Fender (I've never seen any reference from Fender about this colour), but the name was probably just coined by someone in the past to describe this finish & people have taken over this word over the years, and as a result 'Marlinburst' has now almost become a 'household'-name for this particular finish...

This is what Costello himself said about his Jazzmaster during an interview in the May 2000-edition of The Guitar Magazine -
Costello said that he bought the Jazzmaster during the recording of 'My Aim Is True'-album in a music shop in Hounslow (near Heathrow airport), and when he bought it the guitar was painted with brown furniture varnish (which he still somehow liked).
He later had the guitar customized with his name inlaid into the fingerboard, and I presume that the refinish of the guitar also took place at this time...

Yes, and your point is? ;)
Even though Mr. MacManus had/has two Jazzmasters, it was his first Jazzmaster (the one he bought during the recording of 'My Aim Is True' & which is featured on its cover) that was a few years later customized (with 'Elvis Costello' inlaid in the guitar's fretboard) and this is very probably also the very same guitar that sports the 'Marlinburst' finish since the early 80's;
Here's a  quick picture-overview of Costello & his Jazzmaster(s) :

Costello with his Jazzmaster in '77 when it still had its 'brown furniture varnish' -
Image

Live in Berlin in 1978, brown finish Jazzmaster & now has 'Costello' inlay in the fretboard -
Image

Live in Barcelona 1979 - this Jazzmaster has what appears to be a brown finish, but dot inlays -
Image

Costello live at the Grand Ole Opry in 1982  - 'Marlinburst' & 'Elvis Costello'-inlay -

And a pretty recent pic of what is very likely the same Jazzmaster as in the previous pick -
Image

My conclusion - he had/used 2 Jazzmasters in the late 70's, but both of these did not have a 'Marlinburst'-finish when he got them, so either he has a third Jazzmaster that sports a factory 'Marlinburst'-finish - which I think is not very likely - or he simply had one (or both) Jazzmaster(s) refinished in its current colour...

If you look at  the patterns on the pickguard it seems to be the same guitar.

When I saw Elvis he didnt even play a Jazzmaster  :o , some cool teles and an L-5 though  8).

I agree with Fall reverb on this, I don't think that's the original finish either. The guitar in the first pic looks to me like a stripped guitar, which, as we know, happened to a lot of Fenders in the 70s. Stripped and coated with walnut furniture polish or something similar, by the look of it.

The only real way to know would be to ask Declan, and I don't have his phone number. I somehow doubt he answers many emails, either, even if you knew his personal email address.

I think the balance of evidence suggests that it's more likely a refinish than the only known example of a remarkable 60s Fender custom colour.
