Steven Drozd Jazzmaster question

Post by MasterCapn » Sun Mar 22, 2009 2:12 pm

Does anyone know what pickup he has in the bridge position?  I've always wondered but never could tell for sure.

I believe it's a Hot Rails that Wayne Coyne installed in it.

I like that.

Perhaps my next JM build will have a mustang pickup in the bridge.

Steven is the main reason I wanted a B+B JM.  Just awesome, and the Pearl Tuners really make it classy!

But this is the best picture ever!  And from this picture I can tell it's one of those single coil humbuckers.

I like the way the hot rail is done by cutting out the slot in the existing JM pu cover. Nice.
Very nice JM imo. Though I have no clue who Steven Drozd is :-[....

He used to be the drummer for the Flaming Lips, When Ronald Jones left the band he switched to guitar.

Oh, he's still the drummer. Drozd was always a multi-instrumentalist, but when Ron left he played guitar live much more. Now it's just Steve Drozd, Wayne Coyne (the lead singer/occasional strummer), and Michael Ivins (bass) on their albums. Everything you hear on the records (keys, guitars, backing vocals, samples, drum machines, quirky production)--that isn't Michael Ivans on bass or Coyne on vocals and/or quasi-simple guitar chords--that's usually Drozd. He's the Fu(%ing man8)

Wayne actualy doesn't play guitar at all on stage anymore. It's just a prop.  :-\

I think Drozd even plays a majority of the bass lines as well, in the studio. I remember reading something like that in an interview.

Form follows function. Use what you have. That would be the universal way of all hotrodder/stoners of the world. If they had say, had a new guard made to fit the single coil to the guitar, well that would have been just plain ol lame. I digress... but I love that Jazzy and that band.

I know he can play anything, and pretty much sound awesome.

I heard a story of Drozd, when he was back in his full-on drunk & drugged up state playing all of MBV's loveless on piano. THAT would be cool to hear.

Love the flaming lips so much.  Saw them at bonnaroo a couple years ago.  Twas the best concert ever.  Steven is like one of the most tallented guys ever, I think i heard a rumor that not only does he play most the instraments, but that he also writes most the songs (except lyrics) but I can't remember where i heard it.  It could be around the time he started playing all the instrament's for the band that they switched from they're first Punk/Noise/Stonner rock to thier current spacy rock.

Yeah I noticed that, it is really a shame, but steven plays as much as he can live, they have to play pre-recorded stuff to sound as good as they do on the album but their live shows are deffinatly more of a "show" than a "concert" but i like it that way some times, be nice if it could be both, but Wayne just can't pull of his vocals as well live...kinda like Kanye West. ;D
