What happens to old JMs

For your review is a JM in a local shop (very reputable and some amazing pieces move through the shop). At any rate browsing on line I was exicited to see they had got a JM in from somewhere With out reading the description I just clicked on the pics and this is what I found.

I've also included the description they have (Please note the horror of the planed neck to flatten the radius  :o :o :o :o )

Serial Number:... replaced neckplate # JV27117
Description:... Wow,  where do I start?  This is a Jazzmaster with Japanese neck plate,  1959 Jazzmaster electronics and pickups,  replaced peghead decal on a slab-board Brazilian rosewood fingerboard neck that has been planed,  re-dotted, with a fake date on the end of the neck and refinished.  The body is potentially original issue '59 but since it has been refinished,  this is impossible to determine.   The decals & doodles gives this thing a Hell's-Angels-goes-to-the-circus sort of vibe that has some kind of quirky appeal to those of us who have a six string psychosis bigger than all outdoors!
Neck:... replaced tuners;  newer  decal;  refinished;  non orig neck date;  radius has been flattened on fingerboard;  new dots;  refinished;  doodles & decals applied
Frets:...  very little wear;  pro refret
Body:... structurally fine
Finish:... total refinish;  doodles & decals applied
Hardware/electronics:... original 1959 electronics and pickups;  changed tuners,  neck plate,  knobs and switch tip
Playability/Action:... good
Case:... gig bag

I was thinking of popping by to see it in person because if the body and electronics are in fact a 59 the price is not to crazy (but the neck I am quessing the neck might be a throw away. On dating the body I was thinking if it is a 59 it should not have the extra bumps in the control route for the guard (someone please correct me on this!)

Thoughts?

$2160??

I think that is WAY too much for a guitar with a neck that's been essentially, ruined (value-wise, and feel-wise)

I'd pass.....no two ways round it....nice pickguard colour on it, I must say....

That poor, poor neck.  I think that is a ton to pay for it.

As for dating it by the body routes, that would only work if it was early 59, by late 59 they changed to the newer routes to accommodate the 13 hole pickguards, which this one seems to have.  I doubt it would help on this one.  I bought a 59 body that had a 13 hole tort guard on it, but I could see that there were no screws in two holes by the knobs.  Sure enough, it had the gold guard routes.  This one looks like it has all the screws.

I like it!
Seriously.
The neck and pickup covers aren't the coolest, but like the body and pickguard, which is weird.

I think it looks great! It looks like something Thurston would play but in a more classy way

That guitar and the word classy should not be mentioned in the same sentence .. thanks for playing.

If the neck has a fake date, it could be anything .. I'm not sure I buy the story about it being a Brazilian rosewood slab board, or anything originating from any Fender factory at any time.

Pat Pend Tail = $150
'59 Pickups = $400
Pickguard = $125 (if decals can be removed)
Bridge = $125
Body (if original) = $375
Neck = $0
Tuners = Shit

Total Value = $1175 generously

And thats IF the body is original and not routed, all the stupid decals will come off of everything, and everything else is like he says. There may be a bonus IF the pots, switches, shield and knobs are original. But we're really going out on a limb without personal verification....

it looks like that Jazzmaster got paid in quarters, so it spent them all on the temporary tattoos outside the grocery store.

thanks for helping to screw my head back on the right way. I don't typically don't get a chance to see many offsets in shops up in Toronto and get a little worked up when I see something close to my price range. I guess I should just get over myslef and get past my "buying a guitar through pictures alone phobia" and step up the online hunt before the dollars get sucked up else where.

must admit though - from a distance the decals against the black don't look so bad to me. But that could just be my glue sniffing days catching up to me again. ;)
