Ah, I get it.

It's the sum of all the parts together.

Fair enough!

one time I knew a guy who cut all the strings behind the locking nut on his meedly meedly ibanez, and it stayed in tune for 2 weeks that way!!! W@W!!
;D
Maybe its the same thing on the other end when you wrap your strings around a buzzstop.

I remember once on Jag-Stang.com some dude wrapped the strings like that around the bridge of his AVRI, I never saw the point in it.  I find I get pretty good sustain out of the standard bridge setup, no buzzstop, and 009-042s.  Like the one guy said, different strokes for different folks.

I always found the Les Paul sustain thing hilarious, because I've played a few that really lack sustain.  I once jammed with someone on one with a Jazzmaster equipped with 010's, and the Jazzy beat the LP in sustain.  It's all in how you set up the guitar, and what woods are used (density affects sustain), also angles over the bridge, and weather the pickups are so highly magnetic that they pull the strings down can also affect sustain.  Good sustain is more than  the strings leaning over the back of the bridge at a sharp angle, body wood density is a pretty big factor too, as well as how together the neck and body are.  If the neck is not secure enough, the neck joint will eat up sustain by causing the body to react against the neck instead of with it, I can usually tell if I just lightly touch the body and neck with my fingers after plucking the Low E, on my Jag, the neck and body vibrations feel the same, whereas on my Explorer copy, they are different due to the weaker neck joint.

wrapping your strings arround your bridge? That makes even less sense. Still the whole sustain thing is sometimes stupid indeed. My Jazzy has about the same amount of sustain as the Les Paul of my bandmate, and I have a tremelo 8).

owh well, its all in the eye of the beholder right

yeah it's not really like most of those  guys who talk about more sustain even use all that sustain that their les pauls provide anyway!

the only people i really see use alot of sustain are some blues players like clapton and buddy guy, ect. and they use strats! not Les Pauls!

A friend of mine used to be in a high school band and he hit that note at the end of the "solo"
and went down to his knees, the note still ringing, and he accidentally unplugged his guitar.
Now that was hilarious. I heard stories of people wrapping their guitar cords around the
amp heads to avoid this kind of situation with the result of tearing down the amp heads from
the cabinets. haha.

So I guess that another essential of sustainnn is a steady connection of guitar > amp > speaker.
Jesus must be spinning in his grave.
