I just read up on anodization briefly, and I think the colors you see are bright because thats popular.  The color gets bolder the longer you leave it in the solution it looks like.

further reading looks like a DIY solution might be possible for the those into the idea.  Theres a bit of setup time involved it looks like, but it seems like it wouldnt be too expensive to do.  a very beginner-type setup would be really easy to do, and I started to get pretty excited and want to try it, but I read a bit more on some of the boards with semi-pro peoples kits, and I dont like metal work enough to put the time into it.

i have actually made several aluminum pickguards myself, aluminum is incredibly easy to work with. if there was a good DIY anodizing solution i would definitely want to try it. could you possibly share some of the info you came up with?

got my gold tele guard,still looking for a trace,then i'll be going by these places to see which can repo some gold and black anodized guards.
