So, what's your favorite Jazzmaster pick up set?

Post by ohm-men » Wed Aug 23, 2023 11:33 pm

Just curious what set of pick ups does the trick for you?

I myself am pretty hooked on Monty's 59 Jazzmaster set.
This set in my ash body Jazzmaster is just superb in every way....

Love how balanced this set is. Just right...

and close 2nd comes Peter Leonards (pickup wizzard) Hybrid Jazzmaster set that combines his Black bobbin neck with his P-90 Jazzmaster bridge.
Bit more balsy especially the P 90-ish bridge pushes the enveloppe just a tad more.

Kinman Fatmaster. Sounds like a real JM pickup but silent...what's not to love? (okay, the price, they are pretty expensive)
Silly Rabbit, don't you know scooped mids are for kids?

I’m back on the p90esque squier pickups that came in the jmascis(es). They’re not jazzmaster pickups, but they sounds great.

I've got a pair of Catswhisker WRHBs in my Vintera 60s JM. They're doing the job well. Though it means I now feel a need to get another JM with more traditional vintage-style pickups in it. So those WRHBs may end up being very expensive indeed :)

If you haven't seen it there's a 22 page sticky thread on JM pickup comparisons in the Tech Setup forum.

The set I've played the most on is the Creamery Classic 58's. They replaced the Antiquity II pickups which I also love. Basically flawless, incredibly reasonable price and he's a decent bloke to deal with.

I agree to a point...if you can wait 6-9 months

That's fair, I got my sets in the before times where the wait was significantly less. I guess it's a sign of how popular they've become, but I get that it's maybe not the easiest thing to stomach if you're looking for new pickups and can get a set of Antiquitys delivered next day for the same price.

Yeah, I've been using his pickups for, well, 10+ years? I still have a few sets of various models kicking about in the drawer. I love that he's successful but I had the repercussions of said success :D

Bloody independent businesses person being wildly successful in an already over crowded market with razor thin margins making a quality product for the same price as a massive corporation with huge buying power, who does he think he is! ;)

I'm really, really enjoying the Pure Vintage 66's in my American Vintage II 1966 Jazzmaster. I've heard a few people assert they are just renamed Pure Vintage 65's, but I don't think so. I have played them side by side, and the Vintage 65's are quite a bit brighter.

If we aren't talking pickups that are aimed at being vintage correct, I am amazed by the EMG Jmaster pickups. One of the best pickups I've ever heard.

This.

Among noisy single coils, I've just experienced the Vineham Jazzmaster set and they are superlative. Apparently based on a '60 JM of his that sounded particularly good. 7.8k neck, 8.5k bridge, A5 magnets, and just about as good as any single coils I've heard in my life. Also, $140 CAD per set.

Would still take my Fatmasters over them every time.

I haven't heard of Vineham, but at that price i’m very interested.

Also love the Vineham website - looks like it was built in 1998. Makes me nostalgic for the early years of the internet!

One of the best-kept Canadian guitar secrets! Took me way too long to discover him and I'm Canadian, myself. He's been hand winding pickups for a long time for unreasonably good prices.

I agree, his web site is not the slightest bit modern. Seems like all the best pickup winders are slightly eccentric and don't care much about web design or advertising. Pete Biltoft of Vintage Vibe Guitars hasn't changed his web site since I bought my pickups from him in 2006 or so, and I remember thinking it looked out of date at the time. Chris Kinman has always struggled with the web site side of things. Wilde (Bill Lawrence) had a web site stuck in Y2K until very recently. Sentell Pickups is still stuck in Y2K. The list goes on...

Anything by Marc at Mojo Pickups. Have had a few sets, but my favourite were a custom set with A3 magnets and an overwound bridge.
