Monty’s Retro Winds. Taking the late 50s style design (ie. less highs, more scooped), giving them a bit more balance and a touch more output at the bridge. I’m a huge fan and surprised they’ve flown under the radar for so long.

Just ordered a custom set from Mojo today for my AV65. Black bobbins, A2 Magnets, heavy formvar wire, slightly overwound bridge. Can’t wait to get / hear them.
Update on this. Have them installed now, and they sound astonishingly good. Took a bit of an educated punt on the custom set, but couldn’t be happier.

Got something very similar a few weeks ago. Here’s my order:

“Black bobbins, A2 Magnets, heavy formvar wire, slightly overwound bridge for balance between bridge and neck but vintage tone retained, scatter wound, polarity to enable hum cancelling in middle position. Darker and fatter than AV65 pickups.”

Service was excellent and fast, and what was effectively a custom order cost no more than the ‘standard’ formvar pickups he sells.

It’s a big improvement over the stock pickups in my American Original. Still bright and Jazzmastery of course, but infinitely more useable than the PV65s - middle position now actually sounds significantly different to the neck, and there isn’t a massive volume drop on the bridge (which I was never able to dial out with pickup height adjustments). But they sound rich, complex and “fat” too!

Would recommend wholeheartedly.

The thought of swapping pickups in my JM has never crossed my mind after getting a set of AV65s.

Has anyone tried the Lollar x Black Bobbin Alnico 2 pickups with their 280k wiring harness?

Keen to try something different from my current Novaks (JM-V neck, JM-FAT, bridge) and 1meg harness, as I'm always turning tone knob down.

I would air on the side of caution with this; even in the maelstrom of jazzmasters that is the gigging circuit, I thought yours sounded remarkably good as is so I personally would be loathe to change them. Whilst I dont have real world experience of lollars, I always think their pickups sound quite top endy and a bit brittle in their demo videos, right across the board.

Appreciate that mate! What I've heard of them combined with the 280k pots it sounds a bit warmer, but it could be me spending too much time browsing and being taken in by hype!

This is what I was going on as an example: https://youtu.be/QAe6hJ26BDo?si=kdrtiy2-vJNqNw-2

I replaced the stock pickups in my '62 AVRI Thinskin with Lollars, and I've been very happy with them. I've got a Staytrem bridge on order that I'm going to replace the Mastery that's currently on it with.
