How do Thin Skins age?

Post by adamrobertt » Wed Jul 01, 2020 5:59 am

Piggybacking off of the Johnny Marr thread. There have been a lot of Thin Skin offsets sold over the years. Who has one? How are they aging? I just grabbed a '65 Thin Skin in Firemist Silver. So far it still looks brand new... but then again I've only had it for a month. :D

Funny...My TS in Sonic Blue has faded to Green and is full of finish checking...

I'll dig out some pics...
If I was a byrd, I'd be mighty sore every time they shut the door and I don't think I'd sing...

I had an 2007 TS JM which I bought used in 2010 and sold 2 years ago. It did not have any finish cracking. All the dents where from the previous owner. So at least on mine the finish was not that delicate

My 2008 Burgundy Mist Jaguar thin skin looks brand new still. I have had it since 2015. There is one small chip that goes down to the wood on the headstock but that's it.
I can tell there is some yellowing but BM is a darker color so it's hard to tell.
The finish doesn't seem very thin!

Unlike my AV65 Jaguar. . . It's the one said to have the flash coat lacquer finish, which is way thinner than the original thin skin run. Not technically the thin skin AV65 line but it's yellowed, starting to craze and check. I have gone down to the wood in certain spots on the body. The neck came with a satin finish and I have already worn through it to the wood.

Mine hasn't really aged at all from 2007 or whenever it was produced. Then again, it hasn't really been played that much.

The environment that the guitar is in is going to have a lot to do with how it ages. Temperature, temperature changes, sunlight, smoke, etc, will all play a part in its aging process.
