Painted my Squier VM headstock

I sanded the headstock with 320 grit, then put down two coats of Rust-Oleum 2x Ultracover Flat White primer and sanded it 320 grit, then two coats of Krylon Fusion Matte Vintage Blue. Being matte I didn't bother to sand the color, I just shot two coats of Rust-Oleum 2x Ultracover clear gloss on top of it. The gloss took about a week to harden, but it's fine now. The waterslide came from Oldfret.

The color is pretty close- good enough for a Squier, anyway. The cutaway in the second picture is getting the sun at a different angle which makes it look a touch lighter than the headstock. One thing I'll do differently next time is to pull the painters' tape and scrape the color overspray off before spraying the clear- that would have made it a lot easier to scrape off, and I could have just sanded down any clear overspray.

If I get bored enough during the lockdown, I'm gonna try Duplicolor Candy Apple Red on my CAR VM Jazzmaster.

Nice job! That's a good color match.

Nice! CAR will be a challenge but probably close enough will work. When I matched my VMJM headstock, I simply bought "Olympic White" automotive paint, but it's a bit warmer than the stock VM. Can't really tell unless you lay the headstock against the body. I couldn't fake the F-logo, my morality overcame my senses lol, but I was amoral enough to rip the Squier logo and redo it '65 style...

I take it you made the Squier waterslide yourself? It came out really nice. I get why putting F-logos on Squiers is controversial, but I left the Squier neckplate and markings on the back of the headstock intact. Not trying to fool anyone, I just thought if I was gonna pay for a waterslide, I wanted it to look cool.

Very nice!

I matched my Olympic White as well. I messed up the last clear coat though :(
You can't see it from afar but close up it looks kinda bad. Found a guy on the internet who reproduced the Squier decal (it came out a little big IMO)

HNB (on this board) makes waterslides.

Yes sirrr, and thanks. I’m only kidding around about the F-logo. While I’ve been pretty verbal about that topic before, I hold back because it’s other people’s stuff, and therefore ain’t my business ;D

I thought about paying for a good decal, but when I started doing that, I just branded it with my own logo. I designed the logos in Illustrator and printed it out on water slide paper, hand-brushing in the gold. Last time I mess with that procedure—thermal printers are still available last I checked.

Looks awesome. I’ve done a few painted headstocks in my day too. I love painted headstocks. Yours is very very nice.

Great job on that headstock. I have looked at the same paint products you used for possibly doing mine. That's the closest I could find in readily - available spray paint to match the faded Sonic Blue.

That looks Fantastic! I recently joined here and purchased a JM JM that the previous owner had the headstock painted. He put a Fender decal on it. No big deal. Kept the signature on back!

A jazzmaster with a painted headstock looks so cool.
