jaguar 62 neck pickup vs... advice needed !

Post by odieux fonzie » Wed Jan 01, 2020 11:48 am

Hi !
I have a heavily modded squier jaguar. I kept the original neck pickup that I wax-potted.
I'm still not very happy with it, I think it sounds kind of shrill and weak. I'm looking for something more full sounding, but I want to stay in the classic single coil sound. For reference, I like standard us strat neck sounds, and I recently acquired a 62 jazzmaster neck pickup that I like, so nothing fancy really, just a good full single coil sound.

I can buy for a fair price a fender 62 neck pickup. How does it sound ?
I read on the internet that the 65 pickups are far better, but I didn't find any video comparing this 2 pickups. Nobody seems to really bother about the 62 jaguar pickups.

If somebody has exeperience with 62 pickups, or knows about the real differences between 65 and 62 pickups, I would really appreciate !
Thanks to everybody and happy new year to all of you ;)

Tangental but still relevant... I put AV65 pups in a Squier jag and they are truly excellent: clear, rounded and chiming in a way that often puts my AV65 JM to shame. I totally recommend them.

I always enjoyed my stock AVRI 62 Jaguar's neck pickup. It was my primary sound.

Little confused about you saying you have a 62 Jazzmaster neck pickup? Are you planning on putting that in your Jaguar?

AVRI 62 pickups are great. Standard Jaguar sounds. I think people are all excited for the 65s becuase they are more shiny and new, but the 62s can get the job done.

I was mentioning my JM 62 pickup just as a reference of a sound I like.

Okay. I'm sure you kind of know this already, but Jazzmasters don't really sound very much like Jaguars. Despite the similar body shapes, the Jazzmaster has the standard 25.5" scale and unique pickups. Jaguars have a 24" scale and somewhat more standard single coil pickups [with the amazing claws].

I really love the Jaguar neck pickup sound. It is, more or less, my 'ideal/favorite' Fender sound. I think a lot of it has to do with the scale. My experience with the 62 pickups was fine. They were never shrill or weak. You might need to adjust the height a little-- the higher the pickup the more shrill it can get, so I'd try to lower them.

Also: I play with 11-52 stings and Fender tube amps with 'flat' settings. Jaguars prefer beefy strings. There are plenty of people that will swear by regular gauge strings (10-46) on Offsets, and yes, you can do that, but with the shorter scale and the way I play, I have never really needed/wanted thin strings.

Thanks ! I know the differences between jazzmasters and jaguars, the 62 JM neck pickup reference was just to point to a sound I like. I like also neck strat pickups, and I use split humbuckers too. So I'm not really "picky" about pickups.
I just don't like pickups to be only "twangy", I like a little "meat" around it also. Difficult to describe sounds by words ;)
Anyway, I think I will try to put a 250k volume pot in my squier Jag, and see if the "icy picky weakness" goes away. If not, I will try the 62 jaguar pickup and see if it suits me. Anyway, I will report back, in case somebody is interested.
Thanks a lot for your help.
If somebody has experience with 65 and 62 jaguar (neck) pickups, I'm still interested, there is really no info on the net, which is surprising...!

I've used both 62 and 65 pickups in Squier Jags, but unfortunately years apart so I don't think I could articulate a difference. I just know I liked both. I currently have the 65s in my 70s Squier Jag and I'm very happy with them.

I have an a actual 1962 Jaguar and an AV '65. The '62 neck pickup is 'dark' and 'thick' sounding compared to the AV '65 neck pickup and sounds 'weaker' if you know what I mean. The '62 is my preferred choice.
