Semi-hollow Offset Project

Post by vuorensaku » Sat Nov 09, 2019 10:42 pm

Hi there!

This week I really started to work on My next aim:
Semi-hollow Offset✨✨✨

In a way I try to find some vibes between Jazzmaster & 335.
I started making template for side cavities, pickups and F-holes.
I'm gonna try out different wood combination and different setup of pickups and other gear.
This project is part of my T.Family collection based on Fender related flat-top bolt-neck construction.

What I'd like to hear from you is some opinions how to find all the best characters from both worlds, Offsets & 335.

Let's GO!😎

If you can figure out the contours, I would say that would be one of the best aspects of the jazzmaster. So comfortable to play

I would also say my favorite thing with Gibson style guitars is the 2 volume 2 tone switching stuff. Would be cool if the guitar had the JM rhythm circuit and it controlled the neck pickup volume and tone with the same value pots as the lead circuit, and the regular circuit controlled the bridge pickup. All controlled by a 3 way. kinda like the normal rhythm circuit but a bit more useful.

Also, neck binding (with either dots or blocks) would be a no brainer for me

oooo and a black headstock!

I could go on for a while...

Great ideas MC3!
2x2 controls do have some big benefits - specially when making other Vol as a Master and other as a blend.
I have also made versions with rhythm circuit and definitely see the your point threre too.

The challenge is gonna be how to fit F-holes, pickguard and controls :D

I must make some sketching and let you know how it fits.

The one feature of ES guitars I would incorporate would be a varitone.

And here's an idea for f holes that must look awesome with a jazzmaster shape:

I'd like to see one with an offset trem. You could either rout a flat detent into the top or glue a separate "ramp" for the unit.

Like this https://m.facebook.com/permalink.php?st ... 4773490557 or maybe like the one on Deed_Poll's Juniorbird http://www.offsetguitars.com/forums/vie ... 8&t=111317

Instead of F-holes, I'd go for "ventilation grille" style, either routed into the top or by using an actual aluminium grille.

If you're aiming for a pleasant middle ground sound-wise, I think mini-humbuckers or Firebird pickups would sit nicely between low-wind PAFs and JM pickups

i put some duncan sm-2 firebird pickups in my casino, and it has become my favorite guitar to play at the moment. I can float between so many styles without anything beyond the flick of the toggle. better mids and highs than the stock p-90s. less muddy, but still keeps enough low end. the neck pickups can be almost bell like, but a slight roll off of the tone makes for a great jazz tone. the bridge can twang but also cut through the mix with some dirt without thinning out.

Here´s the first tryout with my new cavity template. The wood is roasted Finnish pine. I´m gonna make also couple of other bodies just to find out how does different tone woods act and sound at this concept. Maybe alder, ash and mahogany.

Here´s some updates for this project!!
I decided to keep it simple but cool. Maple top on the pine body and nice cream binding. Also planned to mash up Cabronita and Esquire wibes too.
Pickup might be TV Jones.

Oh yes!
Or like on the Duesenberg Double Cat (which has drawn my attention to Thinline instruments first - but I hated their burst. The blue ones look great though! ;)
