Re: 2019 J Mascis Jazzmaster Changes
In my opinion and limited observation of about 10 CY's, and maybe 3-4 CGS's - the quality/fit/finish seems to be equally and surprisingly good on both. I've only encountered one CGS at Guitar Center that had a poorly fitted truss rod. All others I've seen have been well put together.

Speaking of upgrades and people discarding the stock bridge, can you check out my thread in the wanted section?

Re: 2019 J Mascis Jazzmaster Changes
Hi guys! Interesting thread..
I just want to buy a J mascis, but I’m trying to chose between a 2015 used one (but seller is really slow to reply and don’t know if he will ship it to me) for 500€, and a 2021 model for 500€ (and even those are running out being out of production).
What are your suggestions? Is the newer neck so different and bad compared to the CGS factory? I had a strato 56 AVRI with V shaped neck, and that was comfortable for rhythm but not so much for lead.. how does this c shape compares? The plus thing of the new one are of course the fresh frets, warranty.. and a better looking gold pickguard.
I must specify that I’m not able to try the guitars first hand.. and don’t know what to ask to the shop to ensure I don’t get a guitar which action is too high and could need neck shimming.
Thanks so much for the help!

I had a to look at this several times to notice what you're talking about. The fret marker is moved to the right just a little bit, correct? I've played a few of the post-2019 models in stores, and while they're still great guitars, the new Chinese factory they switched to is just missing a tiny bit of finesse. The truss rod plug is a weird red color, the neck is stained a little too yellow (for me), the olympic white color of the guitar is a little pale. There's also the different tolerances with the neck pocket that was mentioned at the beginning of this thread, though that's not something that I would have noticed in the store. In light of this, the fret marker position at the 15th fret is not entirely surprising.
With all that being said, all of the downsides I've noticed with the new ones are *purely* aesthetic, and really are only in relation to the earlier models that set such a ridiculously high bar for cheaper import guitars. The new model still has a great feeling neck, and that's worth the price of admission for me. Congrats on the new guitar!

It's not supposed to be olympic white, I believe it's called antique white or something like that? it's supposed to be a bit more yellowed and such.alexpigment wrote: ↑Thu Sep 09, 2021 6:24 amI had a to look at this several times to notice what you're talking about. True, it was originally called Vintage White. From what I remember, it seems more pale on the ones coming out of the new factory, as if it's more of an NOS oly white. What I always liked about the earlier Mascis models was how well the pickup covers and other plastics matched the finish, so that the pickguard was the only point of color contrast. The plastics were definitely lighter than Fender's "aged white" parts. We're getting into cork sniffing territory with that though, and I'll reiterate that this is purely cosmetic (as well as subjective).

Similar experience here.dropthebeat wrote: ↑Sun May 26, 2019 10:47 amYeah, that 2019 fretboard looks lovely.
I dunno - I have one from minutes after they came out (2012? 2011?) and I'd describe the neck as specifically quite chunky. I've never taken measurements with calipers, but it's certainly bigger than the hundreds of "modern C" necks I've played, bigger than the AVRI 52 Tele I used to have, etc. I'm surprised to hear anyone describe these as having thin necks.

I get asked a lot while selling guitars “how’s the action?” As if that’s a permanent/non-adjustable part of a guitar when it’s a maintenance/preference/set up issue that can be changed to whatever you want. If this sounds shitty I apologize, as I meant no offense, just pointing out that it’s a thing that can be adjusted on literally any guitar like this that’s out there

Re: 2019 J Mascis Jazzmaster Changes
Can someone help me out with measurements on one of these for the thickness at the nut, heel, 1st, and 12th fret? I’m trying to get a Jaguar neck with a similar profile and I’ve never taken/don’t have calipers to take them myself. Thanks in advance

Bump to continue begging for help if someone with the know how and a set of calipers would be so kind. It’s insane to me that I’ve been able to find them anywhere else

I can't help since I don't own one but it's based on the Rory Gallagher Strat profile IIRC - you might be able to find dimensions for that at Wildwood or another Custom Shop dealer.
