Is it heresy to have Firebird knobs on a Doheny?

Post by RocknRollShakeUp » Wed Apr 17, 2019 8:46 pm

I think it looks really cool, what do you all think. You can give me tough love and tell me it sucks and call me a heretic, I can take it :) .

But beware when I tried to push the Gibson sized knobs onto the Doheny I dismantled the volume pot...not a very stylish maneuver..luckily it was easy for my repair man to put the pot back together.

BTW, does anyone know where I can get some press fit witch hat knobs that will fit non solid, spline type shafts?

Looks great to me!

As for your last question, you can buy split shaft to solid shaft adapter bushings for cheap. Should be able to put regular witch hats on then.

Oh and beware of 3rd party witch hat knobs. They are usually stark white and will clash with your mint guard. The official ones aren’t the best match either but a better choice.

Yes, I'm digging the look too! I think I'll keep them for now.

Brilliant about the solid shaft adapter bushings, I had no idea that such implements existed! And thanks for the warning regarding the 3rd party knobs!

It's crazy but I think I have a knob fetish :w00t: ;D

Looks gooder. It’s your geetar, so do what you want to it. The toggle switch tip is looking left out in the dress up, though.

Thanks! Well I thought the black in the toggle switch ties in with the black in the knobs, no? Any other suggestions?

It looks fine. Pink or grey would work. But it’s not like there’s a lot of color options available for switch tips.

Grey! maybe, just maybe! Thanks for the suggestion.

BTW do you know where one can go to shop a wide variety of knobs, switch tips etc.?

If you have a lot of time then eBay can typically yield successful results. When let down, sometimes you just got to get creative & break out the sandpaper & spray paint. This is usually a more affordable alternative too.

eBay.. good I'll check it out..I've looked at stewmac and all parts, but somehow I think they offer limited items and not the more "exotic" retro knobs and such..

far out..do you seal the item in any way post spray paint?

You have single-handedly ruined this forum. I hope you're happy.

You’ve got to pace your drinking, homeboy!

I suppose you could shoot some clear after. I wouldn’t overthink it & buy a bunch a shit for such a small piece, unless you have the stuff available. The most important step is just to make sure it’s well sanded.
