So I kinda like the Am Performer Jazzmaster

Post by tylerforyou » Sun Mar 17, 2019 2:21 pm

I've been debating picking one up in penny since the first one crept up online. I even talked to the seller, who by the way offered nothing in the way of an interesting story on having the first one. I try not to get in a hurry buying anything and I was hoping to get to do some reading about them. The other thread informed only that it's terrible and no one likes it.

Does anyone have one of these? Are we only allowed to hate them?

I know the pickups are under fire for their height, but we were all going to change those anyway. I recently rediscovered my love for my strat, which has honestly made me want one of these more. I haven't spotted one in person yet, though I did see a penny strat. That finish :?

Yes, dicking on any new Fender releases is one of the core tenets of OSG.

If you think you'll like it, go for it. It looks like basically an upscale Jagmaster, and people here usually love Jagmasters.

I'm willing to bet 100% of the criticism for it is because it's not a traditional Jazzmaster and has absolutely nothing to do with its quality. It's kinda funny how if Fender release a hardtail, stoptail, P90, or humbucker Offset then they've completed lost the plot but if Fano or Kauer or any other vintage darling do it people are falling all over each other salivating over it.

Way too early in the morning for me to be ranting, i obviously meant to say "completely" and "boutique darling". I assume the half point is for typos :squint: .

I agree on the misplaced criticism.

You should at least try one out. It may be perfect for you, or it may not. I love a traditional Jazzmaster, but my favorite guitar for the last few years has been a very similar guitar. It absolutely sounds like a Jazzy, and the tuning is rock solid. If I were gigging, it would be my first choice.

Only played one at a shop for a few minutes, it seemed perfectly well made, like the American Pro series. If I was into the Strat-style trem I'd probably go for a G&L Doheny, though, those pickups are a bit different (in a good way) from regular JM pickups and would make for more separation with my regular JMs.

Anyone wishing to dip their toes in the water of JM-like-objects with strat trems - without offending the Jazzmaster gods or paying boutique / G&L prices - could alternatively look at the reasonably-priced Revelation RJT-60 or Tagima TW-61, albeit with P90s, which appear to be from the same Chinese factory (one BNB, one not) ...

Nice to see that they have not simply omitted the "two circuits" design but instead use a Varitone switch as an alternative!

I have a Performer Jazzmaster. It's definitely lower quality, and I think they do it on purpose partly to differentiate the higher tier models. For example, they're obviously sorting rosewood to use the better stuff on more expensive models, and this is at the bottom end for American line so it's getting the leftovers. The necks don't have the rolled edges or as nicely finished frets as the AmPro necks, either. And most of the hardware is basically what you would have expected on a $500 MIM Strat 5-10 years ago. The initial batch of the tuners may have had some quality issues. I'd still take one over a Squier, but I think it's a poor value and I'd rather spend a little more to get something noticeably nicer.

The penny is a nice color. If it's really what you want, I wouldn't worry about the rest, it's still decent for what it is.
All pain and troubles melted away like lemon drops beyond the contrails across the sky.

No two of us are the same... What's important is what you like & what works for you... Try a few out & see... While you're at it try some of the other configurations from Traditional to as many of the others as well...

It's great that Fender/Squier offers so many choices...

Find the one that is right for you....

Don't die wondering,life's too short

You could buy one and if you don't like it you could sell it and buy real a JM or even something else.

So I played one. I wasn't in love with the neck, but I was pretty smitten with the rest. I also happen to have a strat neck with no home. I bought an unloaded body and a loaded guard and here we are. I'm really liking this particular abomination.
