How is your Mascis holding up?

Post by Steadyriot. » Thu Mar 07, 2019 4:42 am

It's been a few years now since these have been released.
As they are Squiers, they had to cut costs somewhere. Per example: some Classic Vibe Tele's have suffered from fret wear pretty quickly (mine has been re-fretted and re-necked since it's release).

In short:
I'm wondering what's been going on with the wear and tear on your Mascis Jazzy, are they still holding up? What is and what isn't?

I got mine in 2011 or 2012, I think, and played it almost exclusively since then.

I'd say it's practically mint aside from:

1. The gold on the pickguard below the pickups fading away, and

2. An awful ding that I got by being an idiot and changing strings on my bed, and I accidentally left my wire cutters under the guitar and leaned on it. This was just last month, too, after keeping the guitar practically spotless for 8 years ::) .

The switch started becoming dodgy about 2 or 3 years ago, but the funny thing is that I ended up throwing it into a Starcaster/Jazzmaster build and it's worked perfectly ever since, so I guess it was just the wiring or dirt.

Here's a picture of what the pickguard wear on mine looks like:

As far as I can tell, though, there were actually two versions of the pickguard, and i got the more yellowy one rather than the deeper gold that seemed to come after. So it might be different with that one.

Actually, that pickguard wear looks pretty cool.

Dodgy switch, but that is about it. It’s probably from 2010 or so but has mostly been played at home ( by me anyway). Not much fretwear at all.

Nice! I have a general curiosity on how Poly finishes age, actually.

J's doing fine I keep him in a big aquarium so he has a lot of room to move around in, and I just put in a new lightbulb on his heat lamp that will keep him safe during these cold winter months.

+1, that's beautiful.

Market idea: guitars that are deliberately designed to have fast-wearing finishes.

Best of both worlds. You get the beautiful worn look, but without the fakeness of deliberate relicing.

The stock switch is a bit crap.
Mine broke in the post. I replaced it with a box toggle switch.

Mine's holding up pretty well. That being said, I replaced the pickguard, wiring (switch crapped out on me about 2 years after I got it), trem plate and collet (staytrem), gave it a bone nut and a roller bridge. Also I gotta say I don't play it that often but when I do she does play, feel and sound very nice. A thing that I noticed is that the frets get dull/dirty more often than most of my guitars. Every 6 months or so I gotta polish them.

The thing I like the least about my Mascis is the body. It's very heavy and the contours are done like an afterthought. Been thinking about refinishing it and if I come to it, I might have the forearm and tummy contours a bit more pronounced (which will probably land my guitar in the "what have you done to me??" thread sometime in 2038 ;D )

On a unrelated note, my Mascis (it's a 2011 I believe) has a pau ferro board instead of rosewood. It's really clear, with an uneven grain and the fretboard feels tighter and harder than rosewood.

Not a chance it has a Pau Ferro fretboard. It's made in China. They don't have Pau Ferro wood there and they weren't importing it (from South America) to make a budget Squier in 2011.

^^^^ it's definitely not rosewood and it looks identical to the fretboard of my friend's SRV strat which is pau ferro by all accounts.Didn't know they didn't have these species in Asia. What other wood do you think it could be? Maybe some kind of laurel?

Oh man that wear looks super cool!
Good to hear it's holding up well.

The Johnny Marr Jaguar in white has got you covered! ;)
Lot of finish shedding off of mine..

Make sure to feed him a treat every now and then!
The heat lamp is a good idea but be careful not to mess up his hibernation schedule. He needs his rest or you'll have one cranky Jay on your hands..

As for the rest of the comments; seems like the switch is the only thing really susceptible to wear and tear.

have mine since 2011 and play it really often. I have a little fretwear and my pickguard and the neck pickupcover has some wear in fact of my hardstruggling i think. The switch turned to work not good, so i cleaned it with some air. Since then it works fine. Love this guitar!

Mine's a 2012, still kinda mint but I got it only a mint or two ago.
The switch is actually wired backwards! But it's cheap and I'll have it replaced anyway.
i love delay SO much ...that i procrastinate all the time.
