Right... I gotta remember that I'm the dinosaur these days, whether I think I am or not.
I went to a jam session recently and brought along my Ibanez ATK bass from 1998. A 14-15 year old teenager was amazed by the cool "vintage bass" I had. And it won't be long until Kurt Cobain is dead longer than he ever lived... face it, all of us are not the kids that are alright anymore, we're their parents!

My wife is seventeen years younger than me, so I am not at all unaware of my dinosaur status. My kids are a little less than 3 and 5, so it's going to be nothing but cruel reminders from here on out.

Growing old is inevitable. Growing up is optional.

You know you're old when you're older than your lawyer. Or dentist.

If Nels Cline can't take the piss out of Fender, who can?

You really think whatever lawyer/dentist buys this oneoff guitar is gonns be a rabid Nels Cline fan? More likely they'll have never heard of him. Outside of guitar nerddom he's hardly a household name.

I feel like we are overlooking the real travesty—that terrible tort on a guitar with an $8,000 price tag. Fender, get some Spitfire already.
That's exactly what I said when I saw the post. You'd think the Custom Shop and Master Builders would slap some good Spitfire on there.

True, but most people stop seeking out new music in our early '20s- it's likely that there are lawyers and dentists out there whose band opened for Sebadoh back in college, but dropped out of music once they started practicing their profession. Now they're in the market for $8K guitars, just like the boomer Blooze Lawyers before them who had no idea about any music after about 1970.

This is what Nels should have written instead:

WOW - I JUST GOT WIND OF THIS GUITAR MADE BY THE FENDER CUSTOM SHOP. SURE LOOKS A LOT LIKE MY MAIN 1960 JAZZMASTER, ”THE WATT”! I GUESS I SHOULD BE WHAT - FLATTERED? BUT I SORTA WISH THE GUYS AT FENDER HAD HIT ME UP ON A SIG MODEL INSTEAD. THEY HAVE MY CONTACT INFO. ;)))))))))))

The cool thing about fretless is you can hit a note...and then renegotiate.

One thing I've learned from this thread is I gotta schedule a checkup and teeth cleaning soon.

Ask your dentist about his new Jazzmaster. 😉

"It's very nice, Larry, but now that I'm taking a closer look at your teeth I think I'm going to be able to swing David Gilmour's black Strat that is up for auction. Sky's the limit now, is what your teeth are telling me. Who cares about any stupid Jazzmaster, you know? Thanks, Larry. I'll be right back, I'm just going to get my drills. We'll be here for quite some time, so make yourself comfortable."

Either way I think 8 grand for a guitar that looks old when you can spend half that and buy one that is old is ridiculous.
And they heavy relics don't look like what vintage guitars look like anyway.

I think spending eight thousand dollars for a solid-bodied instrument is preposterous, unless it has some kind of historical value. Totally lame.
