Fender was going to name the Alternate Reality Sixty-Six the Jazzcaster. They even goofed and posted this photo on the model's Fender.com page when it were first released. I imagine they'll hold on to "Jazzcaster" for some wacky Fender model. Also "Offset Telecaster" has been in the marketing pipeline since the American Standard LE model in 2016.

Thanks!

But that still annoys me, as it is not an offset Tele shape, and they have multiple shapes in their offset range, and it's clearly a Jazzmaster... ARGGH! :D

And the colloquial parlance before Fender started making official versions was Telemaster. Fender could have used that name too and didn't.

I don't mind the name from a technical standpoint, by neck, pickups, controls and bridge, it's a Tele. But it's not a "cool" name and Fender is usually very good at coming up with "cool" names.

This is probably the reason. Fender already owns the trademark of "Telecaster", but it'd be nigh impossible to get the rights to "Telemaster" since it's already been in common usage for years before they try to do something.

I tried photoshopping what a Tele with an offset body would look like but it's well-nigh impossible. That cutaway on the lower bout sinks it. Anything I came up with looked like the transporter accident in the first Star Trek film.
I'm sure some Fender dealer in '64 looked at the new Duo-Sonic II and thought, "That's not a Duo-Sonic. That's a Mustang".

Fender can't use "Telemaster" as it's already a registered trademark - something to do with model planes.

Fender didn't use "Jazzcaster" because it's a completely terrible name. :freako:

But what's great is, they almost used it right up to 'shopping the name onto the Sixty-Six headstock promo pix and forgetting they did it and put it on their site. Fender's holding on to it. So I wonder what abomination it'll get slapped on since the Sixty-Six wasn't worthy enough for the mighty "JAZZCASTER". ;D

I saw one of the white Competition Mustangs in a local store the other day and it looked insanely cool.

Also the GMT Super-Sonic is making me feel all funny and gooey inside.

And a Strat shaped body with tune-o-matic bridge.

I started modifying mine already by putting new bridge saddles in. I'm trying to decide on pickups to swap in.
