Ron Thorn Namm Creations

Post by Ben17e » Sat Jan 19, 2019 7:38 pm

Not sure how many of you are aware but the awesome boutique builder Ron Thorn is now a Fender Custom Shop Master Builder. If you check out his Instagram, he is doing a lot of things for Namm I think this forum would take interest in (or adamantly reject). Some highlights:
A new tremolo based on a slightly smaller looking Jag/Jazz trem plate. I'm not quite sure how it works but based on the route it is a smaller footprint it appears.

A new version of his C/S(California Special) which features this design as well as some teles that do. The C/S is an offset stratish looking thing. I have a soft carve version with his gt pickguard which I much prefer to the Namm variant but it will be interesting to see if Fender makes this shape into it's production line up at any point.

A few super nice Coronados. Probably the nicest ones I've seen. One is Antigua!

Check out the woodprint carved tele and tarot engraved. These two are just over the top showpieces but super cool. The woodprint was done by a different artist for the design but it's pretty crazy looking.

Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.

That new vibrato's interesting. I wonder what the internals are like, how stable tuning is, and all that kind of stuff.

Though I see that rotten looking custom shop bridge is showing its hideous face again. Wish it wouldn't. Those things are like lumps of shit sitting on top of a fancy meal.
This is an excellent rectangle

The new trem interests me. It looks like a Mustang cigar tube built into a smaller JM plate. It works well visually for guitars with smaller bodies.

Oooh Fender trying something innovative with the vibrato? Awesome! Perhaps they've been listening to this forum!

That offset stratish body I cool too.

Looks like the vibrato is through-body like a Strat.

Damn, that vibrato looks awesome. And this is probably the first time I'm seeing gold foils in a Fender. Not bad at all.

So now we've got, what, 3 and a 1/2 alternatives to the JM/Jag vibrato (incl. no-name copies)?

- this
- Mastery
- Halon
- Swope

I wouldn't call it an alternative. This one probably wouldn't bolt on to an existing Jazzmaster like the other 3 would (yeah there's the alternative Mastery shape, but it fits in the same cavity, no?).

These look like the guitar has to be built with it in mind.

The California Special looks pretty cool, but that upper horn looks twice as big than necessary.

I really like that California Special, it reminds me of the Fender Sergio Vallin signature, but done way better. I can't wait to find out more about that trem too.
