NGD: Fender Custom Shop one-off 62 Jazzmaster, Fiesta Red (1998)
Woo-hoo! This guitar is now mine. It's a Fender CS Jazzmaster from 1998. According to the seller, this served as a prototype for what later became the AVRI 1962, but I have no proof of that. Neck pocket has the date January 15 1998 and the words "one-off" written in it, COA is signed by John Page.
Fiesta Red nitrocellulose and gold hardware, lovely birdseye maple neck. This can't have been played at all, not a scratch anywhere. Probably spent its first 21 years in the case.
Note the pickguard, that's a 30 degree bevel, not the modern 45 degrees.
It came with thin roundwounds and a Mastery bridge, I put on the original bridge and a set of Thomastik-Infeld 12–50 flatwounds. Plays like a dream, sounds like heaven. No need for a shim, no buzz after basic setup. (2 mm on low E, 1.8 mm on high E at 17th fret.)
This is happiness.

Gorgeous! And I could believe the AVRI story. This was made at the longest point in Fender's history that they had gone without making a USA Jazzmaster.
The artist formerly known as mbene085.

Indeed. Custom Shop built a couple of Jazzmasters in 1997, the so-called Pin-Up Girl JM. But that was a Jazzmaster in body shape and not much else. I've found one other 98 CS Jazzmaster, built for Joey Mazzola, but that too was far from vintage spec with its hard-tail bridge, modern tuners and no rhythm circuit. Its serial number is slightly lower than mine, though. https://reverb.com/item/414616-fender-c ... 998-black
So maybe I actually do own a piece of Jazzmaster history. In any case, this is an incredibly well-made guitar, and I couldn't be happier. I haven't really been a fan of Fiesta Red, but it is definitely growing on me.

Thank you! I think so too. The first guitar I've owned that I would call truly and thoroughly beautiful.

Absolutely lovely. Gold on Fiesta Red is such a classy look.

Indeed. That's the colour scheme on Hank Marvin's first Strat, which also had a highly figured birdseye maple neck. So this is like Hank's Jazzmaster, if he had one. He should have had one.

I'm usually not a fan of Custom Shop offsets (because they often cost something similar to their actual vintage counterpart) but this one is really nice. Any Jazzmaster with gold hardware is a rarity. I'm jealous of this one. I'm running the same strings with the original bridge on my '59. Great choice and happy new guitar day!

They do, but I got this one for less than the price of a new American Original.
Thank you! I'm taking it to its first band rehearsal tomorrow. Can't wait!
It was a revelation when I first put Thomastik flatwounds on a Jazzmaster. Suddenly I had the sound I had been searching for for years. It also made me realise that the Jazzmaster bridge isn't really a flawed design, as popular belief has it, it is just designed for substantial flatwounds, not flimsy roundwounds. That ugly (in my opinion) Mastery bridge is going nowhere near this Jazzmaster again.

Thank you!
Yes, I bought it from a guy in Trondheim. There were at least two other owners before him, so I have no idea how it ended up here. Strange that the guitar has survived in this condition with so many owners. They must have all kept it in its case.
