Squier M-80

Post by HNB » Tue Dec 04, 2018 6:10 pm

I saw this pop up on Reverb for cheap and hadn't ever seen or heard of them before. I WAS in the 90 day gear challenge until this one.... It is pretty amazing. From what I have read online, the body is basswood and the neck is mahogany. It is really well made. It has a set neck and a neat headstock shape. The tuners are really good. The fret markers are pretty fancy and have nice details. Hardwear is a brushed metal look. The Duncan Designed humbuckers are really nice. The stock pots seem really sturdy and the toggle works noise free. The neck profile is wider than normal Fender necks and pretty flat on the back. I love it. It is really light. Total win with this one. Sounds great and is super comfortable.

Really nice - That doesn't look like basswood though.

The body is mahogany not basswood, but it is a very nice guitar. Congratulations on the guitar, you can still do the 90 days challenge as long as its not consecutive days.

Hmm... this site says basswood. It doesn't look like basswood to me though.

What? I've never heard of these. That's crazy! Looks like a great guitar but just hard to imagine that it's a Squier!

There were some interesting guitars in that series along with the M-80. There was some form of an Espirit, and I think a thinline Tele?

I think there were some old DeArmond models made contemporary to that one, re-branded as Squiers.

Yeah, there was. I think it was as Fender bought Guild and shut down production in 2005 (I think?!) they stopped making the Dearmond line and pushed a bunch of the models onto the squier line. I remember when they came out it looked a bit odd having the squier logo on them!

The M-80 had two models I believe, a Korean made mahogany set neck, and a bolt on basswood version. There was indeed also a Robben Ford Espirt on this line too.

Nice one. I remember there was a bass guitar with a similarly "non-Squier" headstock shape, the MB-4. Was that also a DeArmond model? It was the model I learned to play bass on, during classes, back in ca. 2003, except my teacher had one with a skull as fret marker for 12th fret:

I haven't seen one of those in ages. My buddy had one, but I don't remember it being a neck-thru.

We can do some shreddin', I'm currently piecing together an 80's Charvel. I'm overdue for a pointy guitar!

Cool!

Good to know that the body is probably mahogany also since it is the set neck version. I had read that there was a bolt on one later, but didn't think/know they changed body wood also.

Every time I play this guitar I am confused and amazed it is a Squier. It just feels so well done. Crazy.

That might be the only way for HNB to achieve it ha! :D
