Congratulations. I dig it.
I have a Doheny also that I really like. Mine is made out of Empress wood and weights 6.9lbs. It balances very well, and while the offset JM type guitars wear weight in the 8 lb range very well, this design wears it well even in the ultra light category based on my experience with my Doheny. I have two Fender JM's, one is 7.96lbs and one is 8.14 lbs and they do feel much lighter then what they are to me.
Anyway, I really dig the MFD pickups and the G&L electronics with the treble and bass tone knobs. So versatile. I could get JM tones out of them, Tele tones, and nice Hi-Fi kinda Gretschy tones out of them.
I do wish the neck was a bit more corpulent, but it's fine. If anything I could sort of shred on a thin neck a bit easier.
That vibrato is also bomb proof, and the guitar has great sustain.

(I put firebird knobs on it, playing with the dark side a bit, but I think I want to put cream witch hat knobs on it)

So guys, are you able to get those MFDs to sound like conventional JM pickups by adjusting the PTB? I mean like close enough that they'd pass a blind test?

No. They don't get the same harmonics. But they are great pickups in their own right, and not completely dissimilar from Jazzmaster pickups.

That’s a lovely colour. What do G&L call it? Did you go nitro or poly?
I sort of have this thing, where with a JM I want it to be nitro because that’s more 50s/60s authentic, but with a G&L, because they are really an 80s guitar brand (OK, I know the Doheny is more recent), I feel “free” to have a poly guitar and not to worry about it. Stupid, I know.
And yes, the tremolo is fantastic (far more stable than any Strat trem I’ve ever played), and that together with the pickups and tone controls is what really sets the Doheny apart as an excellent ‘alternative’ to a Fender offset, IMO.

I asked this before on wrong topic, but do you guitarsammy know what kind of routing is under the pickguard? Is there one big pool or what? Can't find any pictures.

It is surf green.
It is the regular poly finish they use. Most of my guitars are nitro but I don’t mind poly if it isn’t too thick and the guitar sounds good in general.
But I know what you mean about a newer style guitar being more acceptably palatable in poly compared to a more vintage style guitar. Anyway I don’t worry about it and just enjoy the guitar.

Finally got my callipers out tonight and measured the neck thickness on this, so thought I may as well post it here for posterity.....
0.82" at the first fret, 0.88" at the 12th.

Never quite sure why so many guitars (from all manufacturers) don’t come with even a basic setup though. It’s fine if you know how to do it yourself, or can pay someone to do it for you I suppose.

I totally agree with you though. When you buy a new car you don’t have to put air in all the tires or adjust how much gas is used when you tap the pedal or how much battery draw you need to be able to use the headlights. A lot of stores take it upon themselves to get them where they should be, like CME - every time I’ve seen one of their guitars it’s been opened and properly set up before being sent to the buyer. But even them
Being forced to do that is pretty lame. If you’re marking something as good enough to count as a ‘new’ item, that should come with the reasonable expectation that you’ll be able to use it immediately.

Good work there! All the ones of these i've played have been pretty heavy BUT all sounded amazing. The pickups in the entire range are amazing

Yeah, mines 8.5lb, so not light, but my Marr Jaguar was slightly heavier. I think US Doheny's can be spec'ed with lighter woods.
The pickups do sound really, really great. I play mine through a blackface type tube amp and it sounds as good as any other guitar I've ever owned.
