NGD: Mahogany DiPinto Galaxie 4

Post by sirspens » Fri Oct 19, 2018 6:17 pm

I got this guitar a few weeks ago after I found it at a ridiculously good price.

It's a pretty beautiful guitar and seems like a solid quality build. Aesthetically, the weird pickguards that DiPinto is obsessed with is the only real -- um -- problem with the look.

The pickups are obviously steel poles with a bottom magnet. The tone is a lot darker than I was expecting. I'm still trying to make my mind up on what I think about that. The versatility is pretty cool, though. I'm a firm believer that the correct number of pickups for a guitar is 2, but the combination of pickups allowing both single coil and humbucker options is nice.

Nice score! Los Straitjackets tour with those exclusively. I'm waiting for a nice lefty to show up for sale.

Neat. How many positions does the selector switch have?

That is super-nice. Those guys are local to me and I always think about their stuff.

5 position. From what I understand, they are:
1; 1-2; 2-3; 3-4; 4.

So you get single coil in bridge and neck position, which is nice.

Very nice! I'm a little surprised we don't see more DiPinto guitars around here. I looked into one a while back, but the only neck options were 12" radius, and medium jumbo frets, so that was kind of a drawback for me. Other than that, they seem like solid guitars, especially since they started making them in the US.

Today I did sound samples for all the guitars that came into my collection this year.

The sound sample is here on SoundCloud:
https://soundcloud.com/clifton-stuckey- ... -galaxie-4

It is somewhat similar to my sample for the Doheny side-by-side comparisons, but with 4 pickups and a 5 position switch, is a bit different...

Here are my understandings of the positions:
Position 1: Bridge humbucking
Position 2: Bridge single coil
Position 3: Single coil in center?
Position 4: Neck single coil
Position 5: Neck humbucking

0:00 Open chords, Position 1
0:24 Open chords, Position 2
0:45 Open chords, Position 3
1:10 Open chords, Position 4
1:32: Open chords, Position 5
1:51 Bar chords, Position 1
2:08 Bar chords, Position 2
2:22 Bar chords, Position 3
2:37 Bar chords, Position 4
2:51 Bar chords, Position 5
3:08 Arpeggio thing, Position 2
3:50 Arpeggio thing, Position 1
4:29 Arpeggio thing, short, Position 5
4:49 Arpeggio thing, short, Position 4
5:05 Bar chord, going through positions
5:06 Arpeggio thing, Position 1, dirty
5:48 Punk-y thing, Position 1 (heavy overdrive)
6:28 Gaze-y thing, Position 1 (trying to grab some harmonics)

It is by far the darkest guitar I own, even on the single coil positions. It is interesting, though.
