Gotta ask, where did you get your mint green guard from? I want to put one on my 60th AV, as well
I'm pretty sure I got it from Sweetwater. It was a Fender AVRI 62 JM guard, so they don't make those anymore sadly.
Thanks so much, posted this question on another board and got no replies. Was it a perfect fit or did you have to file it or drill new holes or anything?

I didn’t have to drill any new holes, though I did have to make the bridge post holes in the pick guard a little wider so they would fit around the thimbles. Otherwise the pick guard will not lay flat against the body.

I am not that happy about the finish discoloration. Do you really think that Sweetwater could do anything about it?

I doubt sweetwater would after 2 months. But you can call them and have them contact Fender, or you can contact Fender directly. Fender has a great customer service department. They had me take my JM to the nearest authorized dealer and the rest was taken care of from there. Took about a month total turn around but they were great!

Nitro takes a really long time to cure. it actually never fully cures. Nitro is sensitive to everything it comes into contact with, so I'm guessing your skin and sweat mixing with the nitro clear that hasn't set enough is having this affect. personally, i think its cool as hell. but that's just me.

+1 on the Mint Guard! Looks way better! Tort works best on White, Sunburst and Black/dark guitars. Black and Mint for the others! ...but that is only my perception/opinion of course.

But man, you need to tell us, what did you do to the fretboard?
I saw seven of those in two different shops. And the only one that had a somewhat close darkness is the red one I saw (the 7th) all the others...waaayyy to bright for my liking. So where those two rosewood leftovers? or somewhat stained/oiled or were you just picking yours out of a bunch of them - so you could choose the darkest/most beautiful one?

That’s 100% a Pau Ferro board. The Mexican facility has switched to PF boards for a while now. Could be the lighting in the pics, but there’s definitely come variance on how dark Pau Ferro goes.

I think the discolouring looks great, but I can sympathize since not everyone is into that.
My guess is that the sweat from the arm is the cause.

Yea I agree, tort guards are overrated in my opinion. 8)

But I did pick this one out of the few Sweetwater posted online. I looked thru their photos to find the most dark rosewoody looking board. It also has darkened up quite a bit from being played.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Tortoise guards. But it just doesn't go equally well with every colour.

It darkened from playing. Wow! That's surely relieving to a lot people here (including me)! I have to back-check if other Pau Ferro fretboards age that well too...let's say two years from now. Let's make it a long-term-study! :)

I ran across this on Reverb today. A 2005 AVRI JM. Looks to have similar discoloring as your 60th.

I admit this does look awesome. I do love the look of aged nitro finishes over the years. And I wouldn't mind it entirely on mine, but my yellowed area is more defined and out of place looking.

So I messed around with the color balances to see if I could get everything looking like it does in person.
This is pretty close to how I see it, though it looks surf green now.

I did e-mail Sweetwater about it and I sent pictures but haven't heard back. I doubt I would send it back even if they did give that as an option.

I totally sympathize. I pined over a nitro finished guitar for years and now that I finally have a couple (66 Jaguar in Sunburst and an Ocean Turquoise Thin Skin Jazzmaster) I don’t want to fuck up the finish in any way haha

Also I gotta say, for all the complaining about how soft the finish is on the AV65s, I’ve smacked mine around a bunch (ceiling, dresser, other guitars, doorways, banisters, counter tops and SO FAR I’ve been lucky enough to not put a huge dent in it anywhere.

Also, I gotta say, Fender offering a B&B WITH MATCHING HEADSTOCK AND NITRO PAINT JOB Jazzmaster, in a few different colors, for a not-totally-offensive amount of money, is really, really fucking cool, messed up inlay shapes and incorrect logo be damned.

I know the logo is incorrect but what are the blocks supposed to look like to be accurate?

If you google a picture of a 1966 Jazzmaster and look at the inlays, they’re instantly recognizable as being different
