CIJ Jazzmaster

Post by timiscott » Sun Sep 09, 2018 3:49 am

Hi, just about to buy a second hand CIJ Jazzmaster and was wondering if anyone could suggest things to check for to make sure it is what it says it is and works properly? Would really appreciate any advice at all here.

I think all CIJs have the "Crafted in Japan" sticker along with the serial number at the base of the back of the neck, right where it meets the pocket, or at least mine does. There shouldn't be a truss rod adjustment hole on the headstock, but rather one above the neck pickup, and the lock button on the vibrato ought to have square edges rather than rounded ones. That's all the tells I can think of. If everything seems to be working, it probably is. Structurally, unless the neck pocket has gotten cracked, I can't imagine anything going wrong on these guitars that'd ruin them as players.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't all (or nearly all?) Japanese JMs have deeper pickup cavities (like 20mm vs. 10mm on Squiers and other Fenders) to accommodate the taller pickups?

The pickguard shape is also different on Japanese JMs, but I couldn't really tell the difference without comparing them side by side.

Yes I think you're right. CIJ/MIJ left and MIA right ...

Interesting! The Japanese jazzmaster pickups are not just a strat pickup in disguise, wider and flatter, more like a slightly flatter/fatter tele bridge than a strat, unpotted as well. I am curious now.
Logic gates based on billiard-ball computer designs have also been made to operate using live soldier crabs of the species Mictyris guinotae in place of the billiard balls.

Been looking at second hand MIJs and CIJs. Does anyone know of any quality differences between these? Also, has the quality changed since Fender too over the production themselves? Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!
