The worse thing about it, other than the hideous looks, is the damage done to the actual body - deep dents and missing chunks of wood. Yuck, indeed!

That must be a legit accident of some kind. Everything else - chrome, pickup covers, knobs, pickguard, neck/fingerboard, etc. - is so pristine.
Someone probably got a belt sander for their birthday and didn’t have any scrap wood lying around to try it out on. Being it was their birthday, alcohol/impaired judgement likely factored in.
Even the shittiest, most poserdom-afflicted and deranged relic artisan on earth wouldn’t purposely do the above, right?

That’s all fixable, isn’t it? If you stripped all the rest off, puttied/reshaped the gouged areas (would you use Bondo for that?), got it all smooth and then gave it an opaque paint job (solid, metallic or even a flake) it would look fine. Everything else looks to be in perfect shape (which really makes me think this was some freak accident/drop and not thevworld’s worst relic effort.

$110 shipping? Just slap an address label on the pickguard and drop it in the bin. It'll show up looking better than it does now.

The seller is a used guitar shop in Japan, I guess you could ask why they'd buy it in the first place but I can only assume they got a really good price for it, and I'm sure there's someone out there who's really into Sonic Youth so the guitar looking like it fell off a van and got dragged a kilometer or two isn't a big deal.

It looks like a very careful job done in the complete dark, to me.
