That's an interesting poll because this is a conflicted bunch; arguing against details that aren't period correct in one post, but then slapping Mastery hardware on everything in the next. Personally I'd say function is more important (Give me a better bridge instead of the vintage one).

If you're taking it to the absolute extremes...Singlebladepickup wrote: ↑Thu Aug 16, 2018 9:12 amI get the point that you can't just play a non-functioning pretty instrument or the ugliest yet smoothest-playing guitar in existence, but that doesn't mean it's a flawed question. You're 60/40 answer is an answer, because it identifies "function" as the more important to you. I think the question takes into account that you need some level of each, it's just asking which is MORE important. Choices are tough.DeathJag wrote: ↑Thu Aug 16, 2018 7:59 amIt’s a flawed question, so a “flawed” answer is perfectly appropriate. There are always at least three answers to everything, so only wanting two is a flaw.Singlebladepickup wrote: ↑Thu Aug 16, 2018 7:42 amThe title of the thread is "What's more important here?"
You can't be asked which of two things are more important and say both, both is a non-answer.
I’d say around 60 / 40 (function / appearance).
You're playing a big live gig, as the opening act for <insert your favourite band>. This is a one-off, once in a lifetime show.
But oh no! Disaster strikes, and for some perfectly formulated reason that allows no cop outs, you're stuck with a choice of just two guitars.
Guitar A: specs are exactly to your tastes in every way. The build quality is impeccable. But there's a catch: it's got an unmissable bright, glowing "VOTE TRUMP" paint job. You have absolutely no way of changing or hiding the finish.
Guitar B: the cheapest knock off strat from the cheapest knock off brand going. It's in tune and not physically unplayable, but that's all you can say about it.
Which guitar do you choose?

Re: What's more important here?
Consistent with my vote, I choose "Guitar B". I don't want to associate myself or my bandmates with Trump, and Guitar A would likely distract myself and the audience from the music due to the literally glowing endorsement.Stephen_42 wrote: ↑Thu Aug 16, 2018 12:13 pmIf you're taking it to the absolute extremes...Singlebladepickup wrote: ↑Thu Aug 16, 2018 9:12 amI get the point that you can't just play a non-functioning pretty instrument or the ugliest yet smoothest-playing guitar in existence, but that doesn't mean it's a flawed question. Would you like to be drawn and quartered?
Think everyone can agree on there being only two answers there and only one sane answer. No matter how you word it, how many possible answers you give it will always be flawed, this is not an in depth expose on the members of the forum, it is an 'are you compatible with your lover' general interest magazine fluff piece, the result has no bearing on anything and the 'Post Reply' button always give room for more nuance if someone feels the need.
Sorry, but I am getting sick of these sorts of complaints derailing things.

I’m sorry you’re sick. Thankfully the question was clarified, as was my answer. I have just as much right to comment on the question as you do, even if you’re sick.oid wrote: ↑Thu Aug 16, 2018 1:08 pmWould you like to be drawn and quartered?

I never had issue with your answer, hence my not mentioning it, but I have ceased to care.DeathJag wrote: ↑ I’m sorry you’re sick. Thankfully the question was clarified, as was my answer. I have just as much right to comment on the question as you do, even if you’re sick.

Re: What's more important here?
sorry if this has been mentioned, i was lazy and didn't read the thread...
but, i think one reason people talk color more than function is that...all the guitars we discuss are pretty functional....and are pretty comparable to one another...(AV65 to AV65, Squier to Squier, etc)

If I was a byrd, I'd be mighty sore every time they shut the door and I don't think I'd sing...

Other forums too... so many times I've seen the following timeline:
Day 1) NGD - I LOVE IT!
Day 3) Hmmm think I might change one or two things...
Day 10) It's great now I've modded it
Day 13) Mastery vs Staytrem debate
Day 14) Munchies Hermit Pickups VS AV65 pickup debate
Day 20) I never really bonded with it - it's going on eBay. Think I need something more vintage.

Silly as it sounds when you put it like that, it's true and not too unreasonable. I think the average OSG-er:aliendawg wrote: ↑Thu Aug 16, 2018 3:55 pmOSG described in one sentenceSAVEStheDAY wrote: ↑Thu Aug 16, 2018 10:17 amarguing against details that aren't period correct in one post, but then slapping Mastery hardware on everything in the next.
- likes vintage style stuff
- likes modifying vintage style stuff to their tastes
- doesn't like Fender making the decisions on what to modify for them
Part of the fun of modifying guitars is making them your own. When Fender make arbitrary changes for the sake of it, you end up with something that's non-standard and non-personal. That's the worst of both worlds.

Re: What's more important here?
LOOKS are more important. In this day and age, achieving functionality with all the standard guitars out there is EASY.

Re: What's more important here?
This was kinda my point, too. Do you want some $10,000 luthier-made 10 string pointy shredder guitar or could you just as easily get by with a Squier jag or jazzmaster? I'd take the Squier because no matter how well the shredder plays, I'm more inspired by a decent guitar with looks that somewhat adhere to my aesthetic tastes.
