Not a huge fan of Tort, so is someone able to post pictures of 'good' and 'bad' examples?
Bad tort (stock on a $4200 Custom Shop JM):
It's flat and two dimensional and lacks randomness and subtlety.
Good tort (Spitfire in this case):
Deep and complex and has a kind of inner glow. Also the vintage style wider bevel reveals more white and really makes it pop.

The tort on that CAR is hideous. Great example.

I think "cheap" tort looks good on some guitars.
The brown ones used in Squiers, for example, don't bother me at all

Good one is the right one. The printed Allparts one is the left one. Neagle Luthier is the seller on Reverb. No affiliation. Even though the Allparts one has nice color, it looks flat like printing a photo of a beautiful ocean. You can see it, it has good color, but it lacks a 3D quality compared to looking at real water. Good tort looks liquid. Swirls of color.

That WD tort on the right makes me want to vomit. It looks nothing like original tort and it is the ugliest shade of orange red. Fender brown or maroon tort ie 100 times better even if it is the wrong colour.

I mostly disagree with HNBs example of good Tort. While good tort does look more liquid, I attribute good Tort to that of guitars during the 60s
Spitfire is close. His latest batches have been the closest thing that compares

I do too. I dont think SneakyT's look any better than other crappy/normal tort out there.
Only Vintage or Spitfire look good to me. Oh and I think it was Mackarelmint that got a guard cut by SneakyT. It was some really good looking tort. Cant remember where it came from but i dont think is available anywhere or anymore?

I wasn't saying the example I gave was the best you can get. I own some Spitfire guards and I have had vintage tort. That Jazzy guard I showed was $75. Since it wasn't printed like the Allparts one and around the same price, I thought it was better as an apples to apples good to bad as opposed to showing an Allparts printed guard vs a Spitfire or vintage one. While the $75 guard doesn't look like a Spitfire or vintage, it has the liquid quality that good tort has. Color preference is subjective and personal taste. I was more speaking to visual quality of mixed color that has a liquid appearance.

My strongest feelings about it are, as mentioned above, that there’s currently vintage and Spitfire... then there’s crappy stuff.
But Chris makes a strong and important point - some cheap tort at least looks like cheap tort. Some cheap tort, on the other hand, just looks like salami.

Another important difference here is that salami tastes way better than cheap tort.

I think the ones on most CP are great... don't look printed, the right shade of brown with enough swirls of beige.
I have a fiesta red Squier HH Jaguar and I think while it's printed, it looks great in that combination, it's just the right shade for fiesta red IMO. The tort on the 2012 VM's bothers be a bit, in the sunburst guitars specially.
Jaguar > Jazzmaster :)
