Anyone have any luck with the stock AVRI bridge with 10-46's?

Discussion of newer designs, copies and reissue offset-waist instruments.

Anyone have any luck with the stock AVRI bridge with 10-46's?

Post by Wavedash » Sun Jul 15, 2018 3:19 pm

I have a '65 thin skin where I immediately swapped out the stock bridge with a 9.5 staytrem so I didn't really test out the stock bridge much. Now Have a warmoth roasted maple neck with a compound 10-16" radius that was originally going to be used for a strat that needed a refret, but I'm curious to try it out with my thin skin.... seems Like my only bridge option is the stock one though.

I ran 10-46 or so when I first got my AVRI to get used to the longer scale, had been in 24" land for years. Had no problems setting it up to play buzz free, shimmed the neck a tad then setup as usual. Make sure you get get both height screws the same height on each saddle and all should be well. Some wax or the like on the threads will help if you experience screws that like to unscrew.

I rather liked the 10s on this guitar sound and playing wise, just hate the feeling of such thin strings under my fingers.
Logic gates based on billiard-ball computer designs have also been made to operate using live soldier crabs of the species Mictyris guinotae in place of the billiard balls.

I used the stock bridges as well, but using wax or some kind of glue to fix the screws once your setup is good seems to be a must.
Especially in gigs, where I tend to strum harder, bridges can suddenly go down. Especially my low E string is at risk.
This is the case when I play 011-052's as well, by the way.
Once the screws are taken care for, the bridges work very well with 010's, both on my Jazzmaster and Jaguar.

I think Fender improved the bridge on the 65/American original series. The bridge on my AO did not lower itself like my old 62 Reissue bridge did.

The Av65 bridge is improved because they added a loctite-type subtance to the two bridge height screws which prevents their lowering during play. Sounds like they continued this for the AO guitars.

Ah cool. Finally. Took them only how many years with the reissues... ;D I always used clear nail polish. Also worked really good. But nowadays I prefer Staytrems.

i Always use av bridge on my build cause despite all you read on it ,it is the cheaper bridge who works realy well for offset ,you have to put a little amount of wax ,nail varniish ect…… during the time it need to be be a little rusted and the screws stay without Moving (depend the bridge itself some have more gap than others)
it is the flexible one ,you can ajust string spacing ,high by string and more over the sound is the one i like ,contrary to mustang bridge that i dislike how it sound ;)
ps the av 65 have groove in the screws for total high of bridge then it doesn't fall when you play

Always been fine with 010s on a JM. Years ago after a hand injury I even played with .09s for a few months. Was stable but sounded awful.

I'm using a Staytrem at the moment and like it a lot - I have zero tuning, lowering or buzzing issues but it doesn't sound as good as the stock bridge warts and all. I think the stock bridge is harmonically a bit richer and I also like the harmonic 'ping' you sometimes get when using the trem with high gain. I think it's when a string momentarily gets stuck in a saddle groove and then releases - it's a cool sound.

I might at some point put the vintage bridge on again because of the better tone. I use the Loctite 'blue goo' to stop the screws moving.
