Stories of people finding great deals in pawn shops is so weird to me. Every time I go to pawn shops they have a line of dusty black Squier Affinity Strats with $250 price tags hanging from them, or something like that.

I haven't come across a good deal in a pawnshop since about 1995. I blame the internet.

If it's any consolation, this is the first truly nutty thing I've ever found at a pawn shop (some good deals along the way, though), and I bet that it's because they couldn't Google it in 10 seconds.

That's the sweet spot. Has to be rare enough that they truly don't know what they have.
I'm still haunted by the story I read on a forum almost 20 years ago about the guy who pulled a 1946 K&F 1x8" amp out of a bin at a pawn shop and bought it for $10 in the early days of the internet. What a find.

Not quite as good but I remember a post on the FDP about a decade ago where some guy found a Squier in a trash can set out by the curb of someone's house. He posted pics to see if anyone could id the model. Turned out it was a first issue JV Series. Pretty much the equivalent of throwing out an American Standard Strat.

You're looking in the wrong places. A gear-hire place in London that used to send stuff out for tours etc. were having a clear out through eBay but clearly gave the work-experence kid the job of listing it all.countertext wrote: ↑Thu Jul 19, 2018 7:56 amI haven't come across a good deal in a pawnshop since about 1995. Cue me haggling them down from £295 on an MIJ Matsumoku Epiphone Riviera that they had listed as a 339 (not seen one go for less than £800, many of them going for much more)....
Still blows my mind that a company that's supposed to know what they're doing managed that.

Gumtree is good for finding ‘Squire’ s for cheap. In fact it’s the only place I find bargains semi regularly

Good shout, unlike eBay which corrects commonly mis-spelled words and names, Gumtree will only search for the exact characters you enter.

On the "bargins in pawn shop" comment. I've noticed since reverb came in, most pawn shops go by reverb prices, which usually tend to be a bit more optimistic because rather than being sold by professional shops or people who actually know what the gear is and have maintained it/kept it in good condition, pawn shops take it as is. I've mentioned this story on osg before but i like to give examples. I like jagmasters. One came up for sale last year in a cash converters near mine. It was a sunburst standard. So not the cream of the crop and the most common colour. They had it priced as if it was a vista (£350) and it was quite beat up. So i called the staff over and explained "your reserch guy has gotten the vista series mixed up with the standard series. The vista series had better pickups/electronics, was built to a higher standard. Plus a few other things. The standards usually go for closer to £120-140 in this condition" and got told "leave the store, people will pay what we tell them to pay for it"

Handed the guitar off to the lovely Chris at Fender and was handsomely rewarded by the lovely Jarmans for my efforts, and it's presumably en route to Ryan as we speak! I'm super happy with the whole thing.

Well, what guitar did you get? Why keep it a secret?

And did anyone explain how it could have ended up in a pawn shop ?

I didn't get anything yet! I'm more of an inept junkhacker type than an owner of fine instruments, so I'm gonna get something later. Maybe a mutated Strat Mini with 4 pickups or something, I don't know yet.
The green guitar wasn't to spec (Chris noticed there was no forearm contour, for instance), so it was marked for disposal and then kind of fell through the cracks.
