Yeah the neck is nice and very easy to play. I'll be taking it out tomorrow for my debut playing guitar with a band. Should be interesting.

Traditionally P-90 sets are not RWRP. Pickup makers do make them that way but vintage spec sets are not like this. So I would say Fender is just following traditional P-90 setups. I have played many dual P-90 Gibsons and never thought the noise was enough to care about. Hum is just something that comes with the P-90 territory IMO.honeyiscool wrote: ↑Tue Jun 19, 2018 3:35 pmYeah, the tone itself is good. It's just they bothered to shield the cavities so they do care to some extent, so why didn't they bother with RWRP on the Mustang 90? By the way, Gibson does this, too, sometimes. My Les Paul Tribute with P90s didn't have RWRP pickups. But at least they can say it's tradition because they're Gibson and whatever, but Mustangs have always had RWRP pickups. Not a hard fix, but it can be a little nerve wracking to modify pickups, so it just seems like it shouldn't have had to be fixed. The regular Offset Mustang does have RWRP.
I'm glad you're enjoying your guitar!! It's a wonderful neck they made on these things. Just the right amount of chunk and glossy without being gummy. I feel like I can play anything on this neck.

Yeah the hum is not that bad but it is unusual to me because all my single coil basses are RWRP.
I looked at those Fralin humcancelling P90s. They cost almost as much as I paid for the guitar.

Absolutely. I have a beautiful Schecter Tempest Special in TV Yellow, like this:
, right?
And I also have a Squier JMJM, which are pretty much P90s.
I shield the shit out of my cavities AND pickguard, then just deal with what hum is left. I HATE the muddiness of humbuckers. I want each string to pierce through the sound. That's the cost of single coil sound, but worth it in my opinion. (Some fine tuning of a good EQ pedal can help a bit with certain causes of hum, if they are at a specific frequency.
That said, I mostly play and record at my house, which doesn't give me much 60-cycle hum, so it isn't a big deal for me.

That is a lovely Guitar.
Took my new mustang to band practice tonight and the hum was no problem in the mix.
I think the shielding idea sounds like a good one.

Re: NGD 2016-7 Fender Mustang 90
I understand the notion of tradition. I also think it's totally BS. I've taken Gibson P90s and reversed the polarity and phase on one of the pickups, and it's something I can usually do without disassembling the guitar since it can all be done at the pickup. I can tell you that the tone with RWRP is just as sweet, but you lose almost all the hum. I don't understand why somebody wouldn't want that by default. Can you imagine someone taking an RWRP set of pickups and flipping the phase and polarity to make it a non-RWRP set? I can't. Tradition says Strats have 3-way switches, too, but we use 5-way switches now, and oh, traditionally Strats didn't have RWRP middle either, but now they do. When something is strictly better than tradition without compromising any of the goodness, we should be willing to realize that sticking to tradition just for the hell of it isn't wise. Gibson's hardly the example to follow when it comes to bringing a good combination of traditional and modern approaches. They still don't calculate their fret slots the mathematically correct way.Johnny Alien wrote: ↑Tue Jun 19, 2018 5:25 pmTraditionally P-90 sets are not RWRP. There are also some people who think RWRP does something weird because it pulls the string in different polarity (cough Johnny Marr) and of course, that's also wrong.

Now that I've seen King Krule rocking one of those I'm 10x more jealous of your purchase
I'm surprised people haven't talked about him for a while here. His new album is crazy good

What a rad Mustang. With some real pickups in there (instead of those cheap vintage style single coils) it's gotta sound good.
