NGD: Doheny Tribute steal

Post by sirspens » Fri Jun 15, 2018 8:04 pm

While I am still waiting on my custom G&L Doheny, I found an incredible deal on a Tribute Series Doheny last night while I couldn't sleep. The first ever Doheny Tribute I've seen show up on Reverb listed less than the $599 list price caught my eye, listed at 11% off. When I looked at the guitar, I found that the store selling it had a sale going on for 10% off everything, so I got it for 20% off! And free shipping. That's may be cheaper than used ones are going to show up for for a few years. Hard to pass up.

It will be here Wednesday, which will likely be before my custom order, which is coming up on 3 months, now. What I'm really excited about is the opportunity to do a side by side comparison and sound test of the American and Tribute Doheny. Hopefully coming soon!

That's the same shop. You can get the same deal!

But they only seem to be listing one Doheny at a time. That wasn't there when I looked yesterday evening.

And it looks like the extra 10% sale is running through the end of the month.

My guitar was supposed to be here today. So I worked REALLY hard so I wouldn't have to work this evening and I could play with the guitar.

Then I got an alert from UPS telling me that a "late trailer" has delayed my delivery! >:(

IT'S HERE IT'S HERE IT'S HERE!

I'll post more tomorrow. It was a hot day, and the guitar is still warm. Literally.

First impressions:

My ASAT Special and Squire JM Jazzmaster better start sweating. And I really like both of those guitars.

My vintage spec Jazzmasters are safe.

So, I'm going to do a longer writeup with lots of pictures when I get my Custom Shop Doheny in, comparing the two (and hopefully to several Jazzmasters and MFD G&Ls) and doing a more in depth review, but...

I am really impressed with the pickups. They are NOT Jazzmaster pickups. NOT. JAZZMASTER. PICKUPS. You don't get the harmonics of a Jazzmaster. However, I can get pretty much any other sound of them I want, especially with the PTB controls, being able to roll of the highs and the lows, tons of tone options. I can make it jangle, I can make it smooth, I can make it gnarl, I can make it growl, I can make it sweet, but not as sweet as a Jazzmaster. Not quite. It is more versatile than my ASAT Special with MFD Jumbos. And I can get a dirtier sound out of this with overdrive, whereas the Jumbo MFDs tend to be too smooth. They get good response to palm muting and -- um -- what's it called when you scratch the strings while muting with your left hand? That sounds good too. What I'm saying is, they have great response. I have played a lot of pickups, and I haven't play another pickup that sounds good doing all the things I want a pickup to do (minus the sweet sweet harmonics of a Jazzmaster).

Also really nice about the controls, you don't lose any high end when you roll off the volume. And this is the Tribute series!

That said, I don't find the neck pickup as useful as a Jazzmaster, but if I roll the lows off a bit, it's great. PTB to the rescue!

The Dual-Fulcrum bridge is a really well engineered piece of equipment. Far beyond any Fender fulcrum tremolo. And, while I find it useful, I just don't like having the center of rotation - horizontal and vertical - that close to my playing hand. I like the subtle intonations you can achieve with the tremolo several inches behind the bridge. And, with the center of rotation of the arm further back, I can more easily push it out of my way when playing. I keep hitting the butt end of the trem arm even when I have it pushed out of the way.

The quality of the build leaves only one thing to be desired. For some reason, the pickguard cut around the neck pickup is just a bit wide. Wider than around the bridge pickup (I haven't measured if the pickups are a different size). That wouldn't normally bother me, but I did get my pick stuck in the gap while really going at it earlier.

The fret ends are obviously finished by hand, which you can tell my looking at the finish, but they feel great. (Who makes the Schecter Asian made guitars? Those people can finish some fret ends.) Also, they are a nice medium fret size. None of this jumbo BS.

Overall. Very impressed. An offset with both versatility and bite. See Fender, you don't need a humbucker!

Awesome review. I've really been GASing for a G&L and these tributes seem like a great middle ground.

So, here is my Doheny Tribute Series

Image

I've put about 6 hours on here in the last day.

Image

Why does G&L not put names on new guitar models?

Image

Inlays and fretwork....

Image

More inlays and fretwork. And you can see the slightly too large cut for the pickup.

Image

But the cut around the DFB is perfect....

Image

Also, you might notice that my guitar is completely intact. But, when I was going to store the shipping box today, this fell out...

Image

Weird, right?

It looks really good. I agree it's strange that the Doheny has no model name on the headstock.
