Danelectro 64 - Mosrite "homage"

Post by enricosonic » Sun Apr 15, 2018 2:49 pm

I just picked one of these up and I'm fairly impressed, particularly with the build quality and finish. I had a Univox Hi-Flier (phase 1) way back when and this is definitely better made than that. But... the neck pickup doesn't really do it for me. Looks like a humbucker but is a single coil.

I'm curious if anyone has one of these and has done any modding. Was thinking of a P90 there, or maybe the twin lipstick humbucker they have at the bridge.

Any input appreciated - thanks! I'll snap some pics.

I'm always really impressed with Danelectro. They put out great guitars at a great price point. My 12 string dc is rock solid with gfs locking tuners I installed.

Seems like there should be a good amount of replacement option in that neck pickup ring.

i have two of the 64's and a 66. i agree, very good guitars. all of them are modded as well.
i happen to like the neck pickup a lot so i kept it in both of the 64's. i dont really care for humbuckers so i mounted two different (output) lipsticks to the humbucker plate for more single coil lipstick options. each pickup has an on/off switch as well.
the 66 got a goldfoil in the neck and a filtertron (a humbucker i actually do like) in the bridge.
all three got moslike vibratos, which i love and cant recommend enough. i feel the bigsby doesnt do these guitars any favours.

sorry for the shit night time picture.

better one of the 64

definitely surprised there arent more of these floating around on OSG.

I don't understand how the impressive 66 retails cheaper than the 64 but that's another story. Very cool, your work on the vibrato swap in particular. I rarely use the bigsby at all though and wish it weren't there.

Nice mods. I especially like your bridge filtertron.

I've had the 66 for a few months now and really like it. The only thing that took some getting used to is the fact that it's very neck heavy (being semi-hollow) so I had to use a thicker leather strap to keep it from constantly falling.

May I ask where you got these bridges? They sure look stock! Nice.

Yeah, both the bridge and the tailpiece look great. I've got an Ibanez JTK project in the works and this looks like a great option for it.

It's this one, right? https://reverb.com/item/7532820-moslike ... pec-bridge

I never really use the bigsby but just for looks alone I may switch out to the moslike.

BTW - though I was skeptical at first, the zero frets on these really are helpful with regard to intonation and overall tuning. Any g-string compromises are all but eradicated.

I like them a lot, but I won't buy a new Danelectro due to a disagreement with the owner.

Waiting for a second hand one to pop up close to me.

What's the trem on there? I've always wanted a hallmark, but these are much cheaper and I can't stand the bigsby on these.

Can you elaborate? How is a zero fret different than a traditional nut in regards to intonation?
