NGD 2012 LPB Squier Cyclone

Just arrived today. Practically unplayed. In dire need of some setting up (which I've done a bit of, but today has been a bit crazy busy) and (eventually) a fair bit of new hardware and electronics. But the bones are good and it's a lovely guitar. I'm looking forward to tinkering and experimenting with it.

Oh that's a looker. HNGD! I have a black one with a black pg, rough condition, but it's my punk rock machine. Love the neck on that thing!

Have one in Daphne Blue. Gonna use the body for a new Cyclone project in mind. Love this guitar, and it was very under the radar when it came out.

Thanks all. It is super pristine, which is great. And I like the neck a lot. It's basically identical to the one on my early 90s MIJ Jazzmaster, except for the satin finish and the Gibson scale.

Spent most of tonight setting it up. It's most of the way there now—at least it intones with a reasonable action. And my goodness it sounds better with heavier strings than the ones that came on it.

Not sure how I feel about strat bridge / trem. Maybe it'll grow on me, or maybe I'll just lock it down and treat it like a hardtail. First order of business is definitely a new trem block in either case, b/c this one is not doing anything good for the tone of the instrument.

Also, I'm not in love with either pickup (I expected this for the bridge, but I'm not seeing what some people love about the neck pickups on these). The more interesting question is what to replace them with. The early frontrunners are a mustang neck pickup and some sort of vintage-y relatively low output HB (maybe SD Antiquity and a '59, at least to start with). More exotic ideas include things like wide ranges, gold foils and lipsticks, or some combo of those. But part of why sold me on this was the swimming pool route, since it makes experimentation super easy.

I'm gonna play it for awhile longer. This was an impulse purchase / present to myself; but it's not getting any more money spent on it until I get the cracked nut and the pickups on the Jazzmaster sorted, at which point that guitar will basically be done.

Feel free to toss ideas at me, though. This is going to be my tinkering guitar.

Great. Just would like to have one of these guys in my hands to compare it to my fender cyclone. Really love cyclones!

I'd love to try a Fender one too, just to get a sense of how the original pickup configuration sounded if nothing else.

I spent another hour or so on setting it up this morning. I don't know whether the original owner did much of any work on it, or if I got it more or less how it came from the factory. He said he'd hung onto it, but not played it much at all. In any case, the setup was a hot mess. Super low action, but it came with a set of 9s on it and when I replaced them with 10s, the truss rod was still far too tight (neck had practically no dip at all). I finally got the neck, trem, and action adjusted properly and it's sounding and playing worlds better than when I first got it.

The pickup balance is odd, since the humbucker in the bridge is so much hotter and darker than the single coil in the neck. I finally broke down and started doing things in the reverse order from what I'm used to with my Jazzmaster: start by adjusting the neck pickup so it's not too close to the strings, and then keep pushing the bridge farther down until it more or less balances. Not quite there yet, but getting there, and it's sounding better and better.

Both positions are pretty bright overall, the neck especially, but they're interesting; and playing both pickups has a really nice ringing quality that's still different than my Jazzmaster. So this is a score just in terms of having a guitar with different tonal possibilities, which was what I was hoping for.

Someone above said it's their punk rock guitar. I can totally see this heading in that direction for me too. A couple of different qualities of bright, sustain-y, ringing tone. This is definitely going to be fun!

Was this from Reverb? If so, I'm really glad you bought it, cause I had a tab with the listing open for about a week on all of my devices. I came close to pulling the trigger a few times.

For pickups, I think it would be cool with single and double lipstick pickups with a push/pull to split the bridge lipsticks.

Yep. That's the one. I was probably spending about the same week as you dithering about it. I finally got a check I'd been waiting for and decided what the heck and made the seller an offer for somewhat below where it was listed. I'm super happy with what I got for what I paid. It really is pristine and while it's taken me a good day or so of figuring out strat trem and making a couple of silly mistakes, I've got it properly set up now and playing very nicely.

Yeah, I'd thought about the Novak lipstick-bucker in the bridge. I'm still thinking about it. I could even reverse my original idea and put one of those in the bridge and a DeArmond style gold foil in the neck. Tempting to just order three or four cheap pickguards to butcher... plain black and white ones are like 10-12 bucks a piece.

Performed a bit of surgery to install a new trem block.

Makes a really remarkable difference in the sound. Not just sustained, but doesn't require amp settings to be changed much relative to my JM to get a good tone. Still planning on different pickups, but I'm glad I did this first, as I doubt any pickups would have shown to best advantage without it.

Next project: the nut is truly awful. More generally, I think I'm going to get the physical bits of the guitar right before I start screwing with electronics.
