End of the line for the Squier VM Bass VI?

Post by daysleeperjeff » Tue Mar 13, 2018 5:31 pm

If anyone is on the fence about getting the Squier Bass VI, now is probably the time to do it. Both colors, White & Sunburst, have been out of stock on the site for a few weeks, they stopped making the Black model sometime last year...Is this the end? Sure, looks like it. Still in stock at retailers though.

I got one last year. If you are willing to do some mods it’s definitely a great value for the cash.

Saw one about six months ago at my local L&M. Olympic white, fantastic looking guitar. Didn't have the funds at the time, but sorta regretting not getting it now. Currently in the market for a PJ bass, but feel that the Bass VI would fall in line with my musical tastes moreso. Gotta keep my eye out for another one and not hesitate next time.

Whoah, seriously? This is a dark day, indeed. My VI has been my main instrument in my new band. I hardtailed it, installed a Staytrem bridge and EMGs and affectionately call it the Bass Invader. Ignore the GFS's in the photo, those are long gone...

I have the white one...added a Staytrem and proper guage La Bella strings and it plays great!

Will probably upgrade the pickups in the future but the stock ones aren’t terrible IMO.

God bless Fender for bringing these guys back, even if was for a relatively limited run. I've got a PSVI and they stopped making them years ago. I've noticed used prices have been creeping up for these guys. Wonder what the outlook for the Squires will be if production is over?

Yeah, I paid like $1,800 for that CIJ Fender VI reissue that came out in the 90’s after it was discontinued and I think that was around $600-800 new If I’m not mistaken! And I got that for a steal...most of those at the time we’re going for around $2000. I regretted selling that so I was so glad when the Squier came out at that low price but decent quality.

I don’t expect the price on these Squiers to jump that high since they probably produced more of them, but I’m sure they’ll jump a little in value.

This could also have to do with Squier's shift from rosewood to Indian laurel fretboards. The instrument part numbers reflect what wood is used so they may be out of the rosewood models and just waiting for the Indian laurel guitars/basses.
It looks like there are 5 or so Squier models at at the Fender shop with Indian laurel so they have a ways to go.
I'm sure some Fender dealer in '64 looked at the new Duo-Sonic II and thought, "That's not a Duo-Sonic. That's a Mustang".

They both appear to be in stock on Fender's UK website. The sunburst with a rosewood fingerboard and the white with Indian laurel.

Glad I grabbed mine when I did. At least now I can use the one I have to make clones of it myself from scratch if I want more VIs once a few things finish working out.

The UK Fender site is now showing both colours as having Indian laurel fingerboards. Both are in stock.

Like Vistavision said, the model numbers are changing as they change from Rosewood to Indian laurel:

Sunburst (Rosewood): 0305600500
Sunburst (Indian laurel): 0375600500

White (Rosewood): 0305600505
White (Indian laurel): 0375600505
