That's the way to go on a polyester/urethane finish IMO unless you really want to have said you did it for some reason. Stripping that stuff down to bare wood is a serious pain in the ass in my limited experience... Scuff sand, shellac, primer, color and clear over the original finish works too if you're not particular about finish thickness.Witchburner wrote: ↑Thu Feb 08, 2018 8:36 pmYeah the more I think of it, I should just get an unfinished one piece body and paint it that way than try to turn my VM into something it isn't.Snorre wrote: ↑Thu Feb 08, 2018 7:50 pm
This was another refin job by my guitar tech. I know some of my earlier refin projects (like the shell pink jm), he would strip everthing but some of my later projects he would simply put primer on top of the existing finish before putting on the new paint. Since he turned the fiesta red Jag back to me fairly quickly, I'm assuming this is what he did with that one.
Thanks for the words though man, really beautiful guitars you have!

The only body I had worked on was a p bass body, which I stripped by hand, sealed and stained, looks glorious
The VM finish is what bothers me, I'm not a fan of how it feels and the thickness is strangely noticeable for me, it's the one thing I never could get over on this guitar

Agreed! I wish I was able to snag a Sherwood Green JM Jag when they were available but it was not to be. Thanks, PixMix!

Looks awesome! Love this color scheme. One day I’m going to refin my Squier Bass VI this scheme. Love it with the red tortoise guard. Always been one of my favorite combinations.

I'll try to find out for you this week. His shop is closed today and I probably won't be able to get in touch with him until Thursday.
Thanks!

Thanks for checking. I bought a marr jag recently to refinish and Fiesta red is in the running. It's great to see more examples of what reranch FR looks like.

Awesome! Where did you get that pickguard? Been looking for one for my Fiesta Red Jag, and that one looks like a cool colour.

When OSG talks about "Spitfire" tort, it refers to an OSG member, Spitfire, that started making new vintage tortoise shell pickguards. Once you have 50 posts and get approved by the admins, you can start seeing the buy and sell section of OSG.
You could also do a google search on Spitfire Pickguards and see what comes up...
They aren't cheap as far as pickguards go. Personally I think they are worth it for what they are, but if you're one of those types that is constantly looking for a bargains, they sometimes come up used.

Re: New Refin Day - FenderJohnny Marr Jaguar
While I've bought directly from Mark (Spitfire) for some of my other guitars, this particular Jag pickguard I bought used on here from another OSG member. As these are custom (and really stunning to me) pickguards, keep in mind even a used one is going to go for quite a bit more than a Fender pickguard you can get at a guitar shop. Well worth it to me, for sure.Jaguar018 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 19, 2018 5:33 amWhen OSG talks about "Spitfire" tort, it refers to an OSG member, Spitfire, that started making new vintage tortoise shell pickguards. Definitely check out his Spitfire webpage and you'll want to make use of his pickguard customizer app (Spitfire showroom) to help you determine what style and color pickguard works best for your Jag or Jazzmaster.
