Re: POLL: How do YOU pronounce "Jaguar" in English?
Oh, don't get me started.
Saw a guy on YouTube calling it a Jag-U-wire the other day. You can have both the U and the wire!!
And don't get me started on how you lot across the pond pronounce the word SOLDER. As in Sold. But more sold. Sold-er.
You don't go around saying, "Hey everyone, I just sod my guitar on eBay" do you?

Re: POLL: How do YOU pronounce "Jaguar" in English?
I pronounce it the american way, because it's actually closest to the actual way.
I said that all along.
I ranted a bit too hard when called out as "probably another one of those idiot jag-wire" users.
We don't say 'aboot' in Canada, Americans are simply not used to our inflection.
DONE and DONE.

Yea, yea, yea.. I went too far, we get it.
I felt it necessary, as I was arguing for the same pronunciation he uses, and said it several times.
Jag-war. Closest to actual pronunciation in the English language world. It's also how most of us Canadians pronounce it. SHEESH

"You don't say it son, you play it!" (Grandpa in sixteen candles)
Jag'-wahr
Sodder the ground wire on the jag-wahr if there's a hum....
Other fun ones -- informal regional linguistics are fun, especially as someone with "no accent" (obviously inaccurate, but very neutral western American, funny how American exceptionalism is taught at a young age)*
Coupon
Route
Roof
Creek
(Or for our friends to the north: about, Mazda, tomorrow)
Etc.
Quick trick:
Gray (a for America)
Grey (e for England)
More off-topic, I'm currently reading Tony Visconti's autobiography (U.K. Edition) and I'm periodically by U.K. spelling conventions in a guy from Brooklyn's autobiography.
* true for my German for the most part, too, until I start drinking and Bavarian (from study abroad) starts creeping in. Not the prettiest....

LOL. They overexaggerate it in that part of Canada. It's really just a prairie thing. In Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, etc etc we say it regularly. Manitoba and Saskatchewan are outliers and it has leaked into North Dakota and Minnesota. They pretty much just sound like Canadians from the prairies.Grey wrote: ↑Tue Jan 30, 2018 8:13 amYou can't fool me, i've seen Fargo.BoringPostcards wrote: ↑Tue Jan 30, 2018 8:09 amWe don't say 'aboot' in Canada, Americans are simply not used to our inflection.
I was born in Newfoundland, but I was born in Stephenville, a former US Army Air Force radar and refueling depot/intelligence station. Ernest Harmon Air Force Base. Thus, many Stephenvillers speak with a US accent. We are the only town in Newfoundland like this. I do use slang and colloquialisms, naturally, but for the most part I do not even sound the least bit Canadian or Newfie at all, unless I try to.
I go back and forth depending on who I speak to. In linguistics we call this 'code switching'.

I got to wondering how many other words in English usage end with "uar". In my own by no means exhaustive search I found none that I recognized. Interestingly, part of the scientific name for Cougar is "Couguar". Coug-U-ar anyone?
Anyway, given that this isn't a sound we normally make (unless we are talking about the greatest band in the world, GWAR), I think we can take it easy on variation in pronunciation.

To be honest I thought the other guy went too far. I don’t know you but over the years it’s been pretty clear you have an impressive capacity for languages and now I can see part of the reason why.BoringPostcards wrote: ↑Tue Jan 30, 2018 8:11 amYea, yea, yea.. I went too far, we get it.

You've always been a great source of esoteric knowledge, good fashion sense and wonderful music. I remember the day you PM'd me Klima and Piano Magic. Opened my eyes to a rabbit hole of new music. Cheers!

^this ... was really hoping for a poll though ... you know, with selections and buttons and stuff. Sad.
Still, got a smile out of "jaw-garr". That'll last me for a bit.

Welcome to Wendy's. Whachu tryna eat?Oh, and earlier I talked about how if you are a native speaker of English you will probably use some variant of "gonna" instead of "going to", or "tryna" instead of "trying to".

Larry-While I normally enjoy the things you post, I have exceedingly enjoyed your responses in this thread. I feel that you have gotten incredibly off topic & yet, are the only one really getting to the heart of the discussion. Language & it's general application in our day to day lives has fascinated me for quite a while & the subtle nuances of human interaction, both verbal & physical, seem to be becoming a lost art form. Well done.

Why, thank you.
Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.
