Tbh, dot inlays and a Telecaster headstock would've worked better for this model. I would've preferred to see more futuristic colors on it as well. A metallic finish might've been great. Or like, a gold guard.

Idk, I still dig it as is, but would likely have it refinished.
Yeah. Having the butterscotch/black pickguard look on something so weird is just jarring, as that combo is so associated with a classic, 50's-era Telecaster/Broadcaster. Some sort of solid metallic would be an improvement. I'm not sure I'd like a Tele headstock (my favorite of all Fender designs) on this. I think it needs a headstock as "unique" as the body, otherwise it just looks like they ran out of ideas and bolted on whatever they had lying around.

The more I look at it, I think the thing I most dislike is related to the above...having such classic Telecaster styling (the finish, pickups, etc.) on this shape is just goofy. If you're going to have a design this "out there", then go all out...don't saddle it with traditional, expected Fender electronics or familiar layouts.

This guitar, in a funky metallic finish, an equally WTF?! headstock and some sort of novel pickup/electronics arrangement would be enough to push it from the "ugly" to "cool/quirky" territory I talk about in my previous post. It's why I much prefer the black prototype(?) in the photos above. At least it's not trying to ape a traditional Fender-y look, with the translucent butterscotch, etc.

In the right colour scheme that could be cool. The 80's body with 50's tele colours and 70's JM neck are a bit weird, and not in the cool way.

It's ok.

I swear, there's no way to win with some of you.
I know, I know- the classic Fender conundrum: everyone complains that they're stuck in the past, then everyone rejects them when they try to innovate.

Here's some advice for FMIC, though- if you're going to "innovate," put some actual thought into it instead of just cobbling together mishmashes of your legacy products and fucking them up a little to make them look "new."

I really think the best thing FMIC could do at this point is buy G&L, then fire all top tier Fender execs and let the G&L guys run the company. Just compare the Doheny to this piece of shit.

Those are just bad lines. The body has zero relation to the headstock shape.
It looks like some weird, off-brand guitar with a fender neck.
::)
Exactly!

Did they just let someone in the woodshop do a free-hand on the bandsaw?! :k I would at least be able to have some respect for it if they made the headstock at least fit in with this body.

It really reminds me of the Swinger. Like they just took leftover Telemaster bodies and went at it with a bandsaw.

I'm in love.

All kinds of whacked out weirdness (shape, maple BnB, etc) with a Tele pickup setup? Bring it on!

If this had a rosewood board and dot inlays, I'm sold really.

Tbh I think the only things they did wrong were use blocks instead of dots (draws attention away from the dramatic body shape) and use an understated headstock like a Telecaster. I think they could work with different pickup types, and they didn't exactly pick the best color to represent this. Totally should've been surf green, but these are all upgrades I could do myself.

I'm going to disagree with you about this being a shit design. Flawed, yes. But nowhere near as much of a clusterfuck as several in Gibson's stable.

Also, great point with the Doheny.

Hard pass as-is. Rosewood with dots or inlays, different body color, different pickups, strong maybe.

Eh not my cup of tea. Not the worst thing I've seen but, I think they need to stay with what they know best. Gibson to for that matter.
