J Mascis is using Kinman pickups apparently?
Was checking out the Kinman JM section, and noticed this casual mention in the "Thickmaster" section that J apparently bought 6 sets of these?
Surprised me to hear that, considering he was using Antiquities for the longest time, and these Thickmasters allegedly sound more like Charlie Christian pickups. I know he has a lot of JMs, but if he bought 6 sets of these, surely it means he's using them for a significant amount of material.
Has anyone heard anything about this before?

He mentioned it in the rig rundown they did this year.

Interesting. I saw them this past year with that exact setup, and figured he had changed the pickups, but had no idea he went noiseless. He did use that Squier for most of the show as well.jesterpunk68 wrote:

How do you find they compare to AV65/Duncan Vintage/Novak/other "vintage-style" JM pickups, tone-wise? There's only one (well, 1.5) YouTube video of them, so it's hard to get a sense of how accurate they are. They seem like they sound more like a slightly overwound JM pickup.

Honestly they sound beautiful. Rich and woody, not super spikey and absolutely silent. I bought a Jazzmaster build with them paired with a rothstein super mod kit (series/parallel, TBX tone control) and it is a revelation. Zero noise with all of the richness and clarity of a Jazzmaster pickup that I love.
For the record, I’ve had AV65, 62 AVRI, Lollar, Fralins and Novak’s. These are my fave bc I hate hum and want the clarity. I think they sit right in the middle of bright and dark and definitely have a nice percussive punch.

Doesn't he use vintage pickups on his main guitars? It would make sense if he's installing these on his Squiers, so that he has a backup for noisy venues.
It's cool that he actually uses his Squier model live, too.

I saw them back in September and he mostly used his vintage jazzmaster and a thin line Tele

Interesting, when I saw Dino Jr. a few months ago, he used the Squier whenever he wasn't using the teles or Rick 12-String.
He mentioned in that rig rundown that he likes having the noiseless pickups for when the venue is noisy, so maybe during the soundcheck they try out the '63 to see how it fares under the lights. It was still onstage during my show, but he stuck to the Squier with the purple Mastery trem and Kinmans.
I was in the front row, about 3 feet away from J, and I remembered noticing that the Squier had rod polepieces. I figured they were Antiquities like he's been known for using, but apparently they were the Kinmans.

I was at his place a few weeks ago - he replaced the pickups in his main 63 with Kinmans as well. Mastery trem, too.

He’s using the Kinman thickmasters in his signature model in this video https://youtu.be/auaNmXyO6ZUMust say that they sound very nice with distortion imo.
