Just as an object lesson in patience and diligence there is an AV 65 today on my local Kijiji for $1800 Cdn.
So study up, don't give in to 'need it right now' and be ready when the right deal comes around.

Thanks everyone who responded. Lots of good information.
This would be the used AVRI 62: https://www.kijiji.ca/v-guitar/mississa ... 1300669872
I like that it comes with a mastery bridge so that's nice.
As for the 65 there is only 1 used one on kijiji in all of Ontario, so they're a lot harder to come across as I've been finding out.
Just for variety, what would your opinion be on getting a classic player and upgrading the pickups, bridge, and tremolo? Or in general what work would need to be done in order to get it up to similar spec, as on the 62/65?

You'd be better off spending marginally more money and getting the real deal.
Please, take it from me, just do what you REALLY wanna do the first time and don't leave any regrets about sinking a bunch of money into a guitar that you might love but ultimately ends up being a money pit.

A Lacquer 60's would be a strong contender to the AVRI62 or the AV65 if you're thinking next closest choice.

There's a white AV65 with Mastery in Barrie for $2000. Totally worth the drive if you like the 65's neck/specs better.justin78f wrote: ↑Mon Dec 04, 2017 5:42 pmThanks everyone who responded. Lots of good information.

CP couldn't be more different from the AVRI and AV65. If you want something of similar build and feel, look at the 60's lacquer model.

I'll echo what some others have said. I would personally save up for the Danocaster where you can choose the exact color + matching headstock, as well as superior parts all around.
Or, I would go the MJT route where you can build a Jazzmaster through their package deal for like, what, a 1,000 bucks or so?

They're both excellent guitars. I prefer the 62 personally. I like the neck better and I prefer the pickups as well.

Re: Differences between 62 & 65 AVRI? [Yes Im a Noob]
I've tinkered with my Elvis Costello JM a bunch, but it was pretty damn good out of the box. It's basically a '62RI shape, with a stained body and light nitro finish.
The neck is great and the original hardware is the best Fender makes, save the Johnny Marr Jaguar.
I'm going to second the recommendation to get rid of the '62 AVRI pickups and slap some Duncan Antiquities in any '62AVRI. My ECJM came with them and I've come to despise them, after playing JMs with Duncans, Lollars and Novaks. (The Duncans are my faves, but your mileage may vary.)
So, if you can find a decently priced '62, in a color you like, just remember you'll need to add at least $175US to get some decent pickups.
I've also got a Johnny Marr Jag, and for my money, it's the best Jag you can buy today, save vintage.

Re: Differences between 62 & 65 AVRI? [Yes Im a Noob]
I have an AV65 and a CP with pure 65 pickups (I did not like the original "hot jazzmaster" ones). If I had to keep one, I'd keep the AV65, sure, but the difference is not what an extra $1000 would initially make you think. About the CP, there is no need to change the tremolo unit (works perfectly) or bridge (works perfectly, although it is not pretty). For pickups, choose as you like (SD Antiquity I, would be my current choice), and for $800 you'll have a great guitar. Some don't like the closer tremolo and all that, and I get it, but only you will notice (and people on this forum of course ) Seriously, CP's are a great deal: really well made guitars, quality parts, lighter than my AV65 (yes!)justin78f wrote: ↑Mon Dec 04, 2017 5:42 pmThanks everyone who responded. Differences. The chords in the AV65 ring more. I though that the closer tremolo meant more sustain for the CP, but I'd hear my AV65 going longer. After the bridge string length, produces interesting harmonics and allow you to make more fun noises than CP, if that's your thing. Notes are round and clear in the AV65, the CP is clear too but there is an interesting percusive rebound feeling ... not far from a Jaguar. As others said, the neck on the AV65 is chunkier. I like it, very comfortable. The CP neck is thinner, and flatter, very comfortable too. I'm fine with both. I love the Av65 finish, very pretty, awesome feeling guitar.
FWIW, I'll add that my AV65 has a staytrem bridge and trem collet. It also has a Curtis Novak JM-Fat on the bridge, which is different but not better than the 65 bridge pickup (maybe less shrill in the middle position)
Spending an extra $1000 for an Av65 or 62 is not the clear choice for me. Mostly when you also have the CP, TVL, Worn or Lacquer as cheaper and great quality options.

Re: Differences between 62 & 65 AVRI? [Yes Im a Noob]
I have a '62 AVRI Jazzmaster, and it's my favorite guitar. The neck pickup is the greatest pickup I've ever played through, on any guitar. It has a real bite to it, and is very rich.
I've never played a '65 AVRI, so I can't give you a personal comparison. However, while thinking about what Jazzmaster I'd like to get next, I wrote Fender, and here are a few excerpts from Brett Leasure's reply that might be helpful to you:
"There are very few differences between the '62 and '65 Reissue Jazzmasters. The neck on the '62 is slightly thinner (1st. - .820"/12th - .900") than the '65 (1st. - .825"/12th. - .975") with the Mid '60s C shape. Also, the '65 will have binding whereas the '62 doesn't. The '65 would use a real bone nut whereas the '62 would have a synthetic bone nut. Beyond this, the only other difference that I can see is the new '65 pickups. They would otherwise be using identical hardware/parts."
Regarding pickups, Brett wrote:
'62 specs
bridge - alnico 5 beveled/enamel wire/7.7k dc/south up/clockwise
neck - alnico 5 beveled/enamel wire/7.7k dc/north up/counter
'65 specs
bridge - alnico 5 unbeveled/enamel wire/6.8 dc/south up/clockwise
neck - alnico 5 unbeveled/enamel wire/6.8 dc/north up/counter
If you live in a city with a guitar store that stocks several Jazzmaster models, the best is to go there and play them. Then you'll know what you like. If you have to order one blind off a website, frankly, I doubt you'd be disappointed in either a '62 or '65. Other folks on this forum really like the 60's Lacquer and the Roadworn models, which are made in Mexico and supposedly very good quality. I haven't played either, but would love to try them. Good luck!

I know those are just a baseline/target, but FWIW my original AVRI 62 pickups from early 2000 measure 8.55k in the neck and 8.0k in the bridge.
