My cat broke my Jazzmaster

Post by JM Convert » Sun Nov 12, 2017 4:56 pm

Yes, this morning my cat broke my VMJM.

He tried to jump into a hole on a bookshelf that he could never possibly fit in. Back feet slipped but found purchase on a bass case which fell into the back of a guitar stand holding my Jazzmaster.

Sheared the pickup selector knob right at the end.

I can still switch to the other configurations but it would never work live.

Oh well, I need to get one of the rhythm circuit controls (rotating) fixed and am tempted at switching to a tort pick guard. I have the sonic blue.

That's pretty lucky. When I first started reading, I figured when it fell, the neck or head snapped off. Electronics like that are easy (and cheap!) fixes. :o

Bummer but could have been much worse. Cheap and easy fix.

Make sure to check the neck relief. Falls can knock that out pretty bad.
I had a Musicmaster guitar fall on its face from a stand once and the strings were instantly like a slide guitar.
It was fine after I adjusted it and let it sit.

Could of been worse if it was a Gibson...

Yeah, I was a bit of a prima donna with my thread title.

I knew what guitar it was when I heard it fall in my sleep. It is not one of the treasured vintage pieces many of the OSG members have.

I'll get it fixed soon. As well as the bad control.

Any advice on upgrading electronics on the VMJM? Wrong section?

That happened to me. Came home and found the cat had knocked the guitar from the stand somehow. A 61 Gibson LP Jr, SG-shaped, was lying on the floor with the head clean off.

Check out the JM electronics FAQ thread that's stickied in the tech/set-up section. Any of the options discussed there can be done with a VMJM.

Just changing the pots, switches and wiring to the AV65/US Fender parts (CTS, switchcraft, etc) can make a difference. If anything, the US parts/wiring are more durable.

damn sorrry man :( and sorry to the one who posted about the gibsons. this is exactly why i always leave my guitars in cases, that way you wont have to worry in the future man :)
well good news is you now have a legit excuse to get new parts which is always exciting! might as well upgrade it to better electronics.
I got a used vm jag and the switches went out on them, they definitely dont last long anyways.

I'm sorry, but I had to laugh when I read this...out of misery!
What a disaster to come home this way.
Still, cats are wonderfull animals, much nicer than all the gibsons in the world.

;D

Indeed they are. And I'm no longer much of a fan of Gibsons truth be told, so all's for the best.

When I upgraded my vmjm pots&switch, it opened up the sound a lot. The stock pickups in it are really nice.
