I love the cat to death so he is fine.

As for the guitar you are pushing me towards buying a soldering iron and replacing the electronics and going with a tort pickguard.

The one flaw of the Squier JMJM is that the switch WILL fail at some point, so if it's any similar on the VM then nothing of value was really lost. When mine gave out after a couple of years I took it as an opportunity to overhaul the electronics, pickups included, and now I wish I did this sooner.
