If you want to talk a REAL Japanese exclusive - The Fernandez ArtWave V7! This was Susumu HIrasawa's signature model I believe, with P-model, back in the early 80s (I love obscure guitars like this). It's like a bizarre cross with a Mustang and a Mosrite.

I've been wanting one of those Beck Mustangs for a while. They're basically a perfect reissue of the rarest and most sought after of all the compstangs. You can't even complain about the poly finish since the originals had that too. I've seen a direct comparison between a Beck model and the original and the differences were so minute that almost nobody would notice, and most of them could have been explained by the age of one guitar vs. the other (stuff like the color of the stripe being very slightly different).

I remember this comparison too! It went... I don´t find it anymore...
But after this comparison I also wanted to have one of those Beck Mustangs! ...I made it.

you´ll find them at reverb or ebay!?
It´s not a reeeally sought after guitar I guess?

Has someone the "Spiderman" Mustang??? :)

Sometimes they come up, but not often when I seem to actually be looking :)

It's getting more infrequent too. They were common a few years ago because they were in production. After they went out of production, the numbers on Ebay and even Japanese reseller sites started dropping off. The last time I looked, I didn't find any anywhere. I did set up an Ebay alert and I've only gotten a couple hits in the last year or so, both out of my price range. Sellers usually seem to want close to $1,000 for them these days.

There was a point when you could pretty easily find them for ~$500 and I had that amount of money at the time... wish I'd pulled the trigger.

There is another orange Japanese compstang that's more common, but it doesn't have a matching headstock and it's a slightly different orange (it's "capri orange", which is a little more intense). I do see that one sometimes but I'm a sucker for matching headstocks, so I want the Beck one or nothing.

Here are my two beloved Mustangs. From Fender Japan. Expensive imported to Germany directly from Japan.
A Fender Mustang MG73 CO OTM ocean turquoise metallic. CIJ, ser.number is R 044872. I don´t know exactly when this Mustang was built. 2004? There where similar models around, from 1991-94? Who knows more about those great Mustangs? The green one is a fantastic sounding Mustang! Nice thin neck, great player!!
The orange one is the MG69 "Beck" model. From 2006? Anyone knows more about dating here? Serial of the orange one is "Made in Japan" U014775. I had serious problems with the trem unit. Fixed it meanwhile. And the stock PU´s sounded very thin. Replaced with Pickup Wizards.
They where not cheap, but I would buy again both. :) Both are really different to each other. Very inspiring guitars, much fun to play!
The green one is the much "better" guitar of those two, all in all.

Those are really nice looking, and as a matter of fact, two of my most sought after guitars. I own a fiesta red MG73 model, and absolutely love it.

Could you perhaps elaborate a little on why you think the MG73 model is better than the Beck one?

Thanks :-)

As said before they where both no cheapos. All in all I paid for each of them about 1000€ if I remember correctly? (Incl. shipping and high custom taxes...)
But I also wanted to have exactly those models WITH matching head! :)

The green one works perfect with stock pickups! The body is a bit thicker than the orange body.
The green one feels a bit more "grown up", a bit more serious. The tone is deeper, richer, a little bit more character than the orange one.
The neck on the green one is also bit thicker.
...and I changed the stock pickups in the orange one for Pickup Wizards because the originals where too thin sounding...

But I love both!!!! :-*

Great, thanks for the info. I've always loved orange and yellow guitars, and this orange hue nails it for me :-D

I was also pleasantly pleased with the stock pickup in the MG73. Haven't felt the need to change anything tbh.

Btw. those look like staytrem trem arms on the mustangs? How are these? Have you changed the bridge as well (staytrem)?

Yeah those pickups are pretty good for what they are. There wasn't a great deal of perceivable between the sound of my old mg73 and the 1966 mustang I ended up with.
