Re: G&L Doheny
I try to look past the bias too but it was obvious the guy in the YouTube was biased towards selling G&L's.
A comparison should be like for like. We know he had a Top of the line G&L Setup perfectly. We don't know what Jazzmaster it was & it certainly didn't seem like much, if any, attention was paid to it. If it was a $800 or $900 JM it wasn't a fair comparison. To be like for like it should've been a new USA $1500.00 Fender American Pro Jazzmaster used but wasn't? Why?
Although, to my unbiased ears the Jazzmaster sounded better.
I'm sure there will be a market for it because it appears to be a really good Guitar. Just doesn't sound like a Jazzmster. Which is neither good or bad because it isn't supposed to be one. It's just supposed to look like one.

Well, it is his channel and that is the purpose of his business, so I'm not going to begrudge him that. The AVRI was probably used because it was the closest thing on hand that approximates an original issue Jazzmaster. Which is where G&L picked up from. That said, I would love to see a head to head comparison to the Doheny and the American Pro. I think the Doheny would shine even more, since the American Pro sounds LESS like an original Jazzmaster.Larsongs wrote:I try to look past the bias too but it was obvious the guy in the YouTube was biased towards selling G&L's.

Exactly. The G&L isn't supposed to be a Traditional Jazzmaster &, really, neither is the American Pro Jazzmaster. The Guy should've done that comparison. Apples to Apples. I would like to see that. I'm sure we will. Hope they do it with Fender Amps.JagInTheBag wrote:Well, it is his channel and that is the purpose of his business, so I'm not going to begrudge him that. Yes, it is. It has an AVRI trem and witchhat knobs added, but the ® next to Fender on the decal, along with the bright white pickguard, give it away as a MIM Lacquer 60s.Johnny Alien wrote:I believe it was a Classic Lacquer in that comparison? I am not sure.

Re: G&L Doheny
I think comparing it to a standard Jazzmaster is fine because it shows how it differs but it's just a terrible and biased A/B video. He plays a few short licks and barre chords on the Jazzmaster and then plays totally different and longer licks on the G&L. Keep the clips close together and play the exact same thing. It is clear he is intent on making the Jazzmaster sound like a bad choice. "As you can see the Jazzmaster is just so thin sounding even with overdrive and compression" "You can hear how much fuller and better the G&L sounds"
Let me be the judge of what I hear.

The more I see this black blocks and bindings, on the maple neck, the more I like it. The Jazzmaster offered this option in '68 and '69 but I've never seen one.

What's up with all the Doheny models having black switch tips? It looks odd when the pickups and knobs are cream and the switch is black. I just noticed that when scrolling through Doheny pics on the G&L forum.

Yeah, that is strange. Huh, well adds to the charm of the first run of these Dohenys...
