Unlike Fender, G&L seem to give any sort of option that you want.
There is the Fender Custom Shop & Mod Shop but G&L seem to be a little more active in this area.
Realize this can cost extra but it is nice to see.

Sparkle finish? No problem
Competition stripes? Of course
Blocks and maple? Not my choice but yes

yeah - i've played G&L's for 20 years, i've been in touch with them over the years, and it strikes me that the Doheny has invigorated the crew over there and they've been enjoying experimenting with ideas, like the JM MFD humbucker.
i started bugging them some years ago about doing a JM, and at one point one of the guys asked me exactly how i'd want to spec mine. turns out when they finally announced the Doheny, i could get the maple BB&B and black pup covers, knobs etc. that i listed back then. so i got one! only thing i couldn't get was the gold anodized guard.

imagine my surprise when i saw one with a gold guard at NAMM! i went a little nuts. but it never was an an option (so far). i asked the builder Dave and they just had the idea one day, and ordered up a small batch of those guards to build with. i pleaded with them long enough that they promised to set one aside for me... it just arrived in the mail yesterday!

This guitar plays so well! I love it with the gold guard even more. May have to fight you to use it at a show!

hey brothermandude! good to see you online. did i mention i flew away to visit my mom? so it's there in the studio if you want to go play!

it would be hard to give it up on stage... but maybe if i switched to my Jazzblaster... or swapped for your '69 Jazzy ;)

My man! We can swap onstage anytime. You can play my ‘69 or even the goldmaster if you’re feeling groovy!

has anyone duked it out on stage for a guitar? that's surely one way to earn an endorsement... not enough Dohenies for this band!

Unreal. It looks so good with that combination of aesthetics. It's so hard to narrow down what I want. I am going to get a custom one, since I only plan on owning one (unless they really blow me away). I love this look. I'm also thinking about doing something with the new Galaxy Black colour or the Black Burst.
I really hope they make the gold guards available. They really do look amazing.

edit: Nice Comanche!

Does G&L offer another option for the Bridge & Tremelo?

There's a hardtail version as well that uses the saddlelock bridge. The DFV is the only vibrato option at this time.

Well, I was close to ordering a Doheny, maybe even a Custom Shop, as these are now available, but I'm not sure about the thin neck, and the nut and string spacing specs.

Just as a reference point, do any of you with Doheny's also play Fender American Standards or Professionals ( 1.650" (42 mm) Nut Width), or Gibson Les Paul Historics (1.695" (43 mm) Nut Width), and if so do you have any problem going to the Doheny?

I also have a Fender Wildwood Thin Skin Tele, and a Custom Shop 64 Closet Classic Jazzmaster, that I am fine with as far as string spacing and nut width is concerned, although I don't know what the specs are off the top of my head. On the Jazzmaster I actually use a Staytrem bridge.

The other issue is the slim nature of the Doheny's neck, but I could live with a slim neck, whereas if the string spacing is too "off" for me, then that is a deal breaker.

Thoughts?

Oh, Also, is there a difference between "custom shop" G&L MFD pickups vs the "regular" USA MFD pickups?

All G&L pickups, from their custom shop through the Asian made Tribute series are the same (with very few exceptions). That is one of the great things about G&L!

Cheers, man - i appreciate the appreciation! that Doheny is the realization of an aesthetic that i came up with a few years back, when i first asked G&L, "why don't you make a JM-style offset?", and they asked, "how would you like it?"...

i had always figured that if they did one, the overall quality would make it worthwhile. while i do have a couple of custom JM-style guitar projects where the look was realized, this Doheny is the first guitar that i've custom ordered/modded that has exceeded my hopes in terms of sound and playability. it's really that good, with room to cut/boost on the fly while playing. it never really comes up short in the jazz/experimental/indie/rock/ambient styles i've been playing this year. and i don't think i've gone back to my other guitars so far this year, other than my Burny SG copy, when i needed a throbbing humbuckery sound.

the fact that it does what it does so well, and looks exactly how i wanted is still surprising, over six months later!

i've seen a couple of Black finishes with maple, BB&B, and i dig the look, too. but last i chatted with them, the gold guard would not be on the menu. one thing we noticed is, they are really susceptible to scratching. after my first session, the guard was all scratched up! it's mostly pick material coming off on the anodized texture, and i use white picks... i don't think it will bother me, but i was really surprised! but if you really want a GG and can't order it, try me on a PM.

hmmm - i've never thought of the Doheny neck as being particularly thin. it's thicker than my main Jazzmaster (1959), but a bit thinner (near the headstock) than my 2015 AV65, which is the chunkiest Fender offset that i own, out of several.
according to my spec sheet, i've got 0.820" depth at first fret, and 0.870" at 12th fret. i believe this is standard issue for the Doheny with standard 9.5" radius.

in terms of width, mine has 1-11/16" nut width (1.695), and yields a string spacing of 1- 5/8" (1.625).

i dig the very slightly more spacious feel of the Doheny, compared to my '59 JM, it's a bit more like my SG or '76 Explorer in terms of spacing. similar to my SG in thickness. not as thick as my super-chunk Explorer...

i have somewhat big hands. if you're worried about the Doheny feeling cramped or too small, it's not.
i've been seeing these (and now the Tribute models) in good stores, while traveling the US, even while passing through Bakersfield, CA and Naples, FL ! if you live near a city, you should be able to try one.

and of course, if you are going to order one, they do have multiple options for the neck specs. were do you live?
i've encountered several dealers who are pretty good with the spec options.

cheers!

Last I checked, G&L had not yet started offering anything but the standard neck on the Doheny. They keep saying it is coming, but I haven't seen it offered yet.

Sorry. To be more clear: G&L Custom Shop does not offer anything but the standard Doheny neck. There are no variations yet.
