Quoted for truth. He’s one of my favorite bassists by far.
never gets much credit in the grand scheme of things

His work on Beck's "Sea Change" record is legend.

9,5". Sorry.
PRESS RELEASE: Known as a true renaissance man of the modern music scene, Justin Meldal-Johnsen’s bass credits range a variety of top artists across genres. From studio to stage, Justin’s treasured ’67 Mustang Bass is his tool of choice.

Fender has teamed up with him to create a signature 4-string modeled after his vintage Daphne Blue instrument - the limited edition JMJ Road Worn Mustang Bass.

Powered by a custom-spec split-coil pickup, the JMJ Road Worn Mustang bass is perfect for playing punchy, melodic bass lines.

The 30" scale gives it a tight, focused tone while the modern 9.5”-radius fingerboard with rolled edges offers a familiar feel that will make any bassist feel right at home.

Designed for comfort and speed, this bass also has stage-ready style.

Launching October 17, 2017

CITES only applies to imports. The change to pau ferro is strictly on non-American models.

What little specs have been released on the Harrison Tele imply that its solid rosewood like the originals (presumably with the maple strip in the middle). At $2500, it better be!

Is it the picture or does the headstock seem out of proportion? Otherwise cool little Bass.

Yup, I'm buying one of these as soon as they come out. I've been waiting for the right Mustang bass to come along. Anyone know when the pre-orders will start and/or how to get a 20% coupon from Musician's Friend or a similar site?

There is a thread about this over on the talkbass forum. JMJ joined in to talk about the idea for this bass and how close it is to his Mustang it was based on. It's rare to see someone interact like that and answer questions people may have.

From JMJ on talkbass:

"Custom wound pickup via Duncan (worked out super close to my original), Hipshot replica lollipop tuners (really nice), alder body, nice piece of rosewood on the board (sourcing some that has more red in it), extra thick headstock (might be the secret to my original), no belly contour on the body (appropriate to '66-'68, I think) so there's more mass there, tumbled metal and plastic hardware, nice little round-over to the fingerboard edges, contoured nut edges so it doesn't feel like some new basses do. Wear on the back of the neck. Fender medium-scale flats (like Chromes) and yes: $999 list. Worked hard to get it there, even as MIM. Small profit, this is not a big money maker. Gig bag. It feels great, it sounds great, and to me, it looks great. Vintage look and feel for considerably less than a solid vintage '66 would go for, obvs. That was the idea. Shipping Oct, apparently. I think that about covers it!"

I want one.

That's a nice little marketing plug on talkbass. Still can't stand that forum.

Talkbass is a funny place. Odds are any day you'll find another debate about whether the Precision bass is any good, and guys begging for advice about flat wounds versus rounds. I think a lot of dudes are just collectors, cover band folks and, somewhat strangely, worship musicians.

That said, any time I've ever had a question about something, there's usually an army of folks ready to reply, pretty quickly. Only catch is the threads can move really fast and get expansive pretty quickly. I'm not super active there, nor am I on any forum, but Talkbass is valuable.

There were a bunch of folks in the JMJ bass thread crapping on him: "I've never heard of that guy, why does he deserve a signature bass?" It was funny when he actually showed up in the thread.
