NGD: AVRI 62 Jaguar

Post by simonhpieman » Tue Apr 25, 2017 9:29 am

Picked this up this afternoon. AVRI 62 Jaguar in sunburst. Plays like an absolute cow, needs some serious setting up, it's choking all over the place. Bends past the 12th fret are completely out of the question.

I'm also not a great fan of the dark tort but the rest of it just oozes class. Came with all the original case candy too, completely unused, which was nice.

The only glaring issue, if you can really call it that, is where the previous (and only) owner screwed the neck pickup down so much that the cover has sunk and warped to the point where even the pole hole at the bass end has enlarged. I also think the claws are on backwards but ho hum...

It was a pretty good deal so I went down not expecting too much but this thing is a much bigger jump from my Japanese Jaguar than I imagined. I think the nitro finish makes a huge difference in terms of feel and I love the way the black in the burst is so dull and vintage-y up close.

Just need pointers on a red guard now!

My 2001 MIA 62 Jag (Dakota Red) is currently at the shop now for a setup/pick-up swap and yes, the body and neck are great pieces. But man, oh man, those guitars need some serious setups. :'( Kinda bums me out a bit considering how good my MIJ 66B RI Jazzmaster was. But I'm pretty sure that when I get it back from my tech, it'll give my Jazzy a run for the money.

Did you get the case candy with it?

Yeah, the strap was unused as was the cable - it still had the cable tie around it!

Can't really afford a setup right now and it seemed to come with only 1 allen key so I can't do it myself either. I need a smaller one to adjust the saddles and I assume yet another to adjust the bridge... I love offsets but boy are they a pain in the ass at times!

Interesting what you say about your MIJ Jazzmaster. My MIJ jag is really well put together and feels solid but it's made me realise how different the finish and pickups are on the AVRI. It's night and day.

Pretty sure I came close to impulse buying this one a few days ago: looks great and I'm sure it won't be too much hard work to set up! Congrats on the new guitar!

No, the allen key that comes with it (assuming it is the one that came with the guitar originally) adjusts both the bridge height and the saddle height. Give it a try.

I'm afraid it adjusts neither! It's definitely too big for the grub screws in the saddles.

Works on the big volume and tone knobs though...

Nice find - congrats!

Personally, on sunburt I prefer that dark brown tort to the red variants.

So rad! Nothing beats a properly set up Jag. Just spend some time on it.

I agree wholeheartedly. I even prefer it on Black and Sherwood jazzmasters as well.
The brown tort matches the overall colour scheme of the 3TSB much better than the red.
Totally subjective though, of course.

Nice score OP. AVRI series are really good guitars. I like them better than the AV series actually, mostly due to the unbound neck and the shape and feel of the neck.
Pickups are good on both series. I like the AVRI 62 pups better on the JM and the AV65 better on the Jag.
Once again subjective.

Each to their own.

I personally prefer to accent the orange/red in the burst with a red guard. I also played an absolutely stunning 67 Jazzmaster with that colour scheme so perhaps I'm mourning a missed opportunity!

Will to trade if anyone's in the opposite situation to me :)

Don't know if I can really call this the plot thickening but I've just tried the "AVRI" allen key in my CIJ Jag and it works fine. Should things be a different size on AVRIs? Have I just been given the wrong allen key?

Confused now!

A full set of Allan keys (metric and imperial) was probably the best $9 I ever spent, many moons ago. If you stop by a hardware store, you'll never have to worry again about what came with a specific guitar.

Thanks, yeah £4.50 at my local B&Q (no idea what that stands for, if anything, but it's a giant hardware store and garden centre) will see me right.

As far as I know the sizes should be pretty much the same. The AVRI should be stamped in the body cavity, but early AVRIs only have the serial number on the neck plate and not on the heel of the neck like MIJ/CIJs, which is irritating.
