Black Affinity HH Jazzmaster

Post by HNB » Tue Mar 07, 2017 7:08 pm

I liked the white guitar so much, I picked up a black one to mod. This one is just going to have a bridge pickup, volume, tone, and jack. No neck pickup or toggle. Getting a red tort guard made for it and some black tele style knobs.

Here are some pictures. Comparisons to the white one. This one is a month older according to the neck stamp. The ferrules in the back actually fell out when I took the strings off. I will likely need to add a little superglue or something in the holes and pop them back in. Kind of funny and not a big deal. Everything else other than the stamps are pretty much the same. The neck on this one has a nicer rosewood and even a slight flame on the back. I took the neck off to do the stain and tung oil treatment just like the other.

A lot of the stock pickups are open.

I have the same loose ferrule problem on my Silvertones. Thought about gluing them in. Not sure how much I care though.

thankq for your persistence in recording your experiments with these HNB.

am torn between building a project (molto effort for unskilled new bee) or going for a blackie of these. fortunately/unfortunately funding issues will force me to wait until early summer, so lots of time to reflect on options.
meanwhile your posts make first-rate spectating for the curious.

i sold my jagmaster this year (my ony jm/jag variant) because it had a lame strat-style trem i couldn't get on with. but these hardtails with big routs for HBs & modded elecs are almost irresistible. what won't they do? platform-tastic.
i am an animal.

So the only thing that bugs me is the ribbon part on one side is pulled down a little. Anything to worry about?

My OCD got the better of me and I tried to tug the ribbon up a bit and ripped it..... So I took everything apart and pulled the pickup, ripped all the ribbon off and wrapped electrical tape around the pickup in its place. Not probably the perfect fix, but it kind of looks better. Even with the thinner electrical tape I am having problems with the pickup wanting to pull the electrical tape down. I guess Trembuckers are just a little too big for these openings?

Take a file and open the pickup hole up a bit.

Really sharp looking! Wish I had the money to indulge myself with inexpensive guitars I could modify!

PST Guitars made it for me. P Scott Tucker is his name on Facebook if you want to message him. He made me four different guards and since he has a template now, there wouldn't be a template fee! LOL

I got a new pickup for it that doesn't wedge in the pickup opening. A nice Fender Atomic Humbucker which is kind of their version of a JB but a little different. Sounds great still and I can adjust the pickup without it falling apart... :)

I know this is an old post but I wanted to jump in here to say thanks. This post really helped me with my JM XII project. I took Christopher's suggestion and contacted P Scott Tucker at PST Guitars in VA. He made me a custom red tort guard with mustang pickup holes and trimmed it to fit a lower Jaguar control plate. (I had to dremel the inner edge of the plate to smooth it out) He did high quality work (the tort is really nice) and was great to work with. I highly recommend him if you're looking for a custom guard for the Affinity JM as he already has a template as mentioned before. ImageIMG_4100 by Roy Batty, on Flickr
