Should I keep my J Mascis or get a different Jazzmaster?
Hey guys! This is my first post here.
I currently have a Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster, all stock and I'm super happy with it but I cant help but wonder if I'd like any of the other Jazzmaster models more. I could do a trade with a local person for a sunburst classic player, or I was thinking about selling it and saving up for a classic 60's lacquer. Are either of those guitars worth getting rid of my J Mascis for?

Is there any reason why the classic player isn't worth it?

Squier Mascis & Classic Player are kind of the same. Not exactly of course, different neck, different pups, but they both have moved trem positions, non-vintage JM pups, TOM bridges, etc. If you like the Mascis, no real reason to swap.
60's Lacquer is a vintage spec Jazzmaster. Clear reasons to swap if you want the vintage Jazzmaster type sound & feel.

You might want to check out the American Vintage Reissue Jazzmasters as well, they're worth saving for. I'd go with the 60s Lacquer if you're between the Classic Player and that though, nitrocellulose finish and vintage specs outweigh the CP heavily.

I agree Lacquer 60's. Has USA AV65 Pickups. It's as close as you can get to an AV65, which is the Top Of The Line, for 1/3 the money.
The Classic isn't even close IMO. Not the Pickups, Neck or the build quality.

Call me crazy but in my opinion if you are already super happy with your current guitar I see no reason to get rid of that guitar. If you want to try out other jazzmaster models see if any stores near you have them and try them but keep your current jazzmaster too since you like it.

I'd definitely go try others first. The JMJM punches way above its weight and it's easy and cheap to mod if you want to swap something out that you like on another model.
This is an excellent rectangle

wait, wait. if someone is offering you a classic player JM for a straight up trade for your Mascis, then DO IT. Neither are traditional jazzmasters, but the CP is definitely more valuable and would get you more if you sold it down the line.
There's a comparative video of the CP and the mascis, and while they both sound nice, i think the CP gets the slight nod. and this coming from someone who used to own a mascis and i loved it. but i would have traded it for a CP 10 times out of 10.

i agree with most here. don't sell a guitar you like to get one that you hope you will like.
keep the one and save for the other. because there's nothing wrong with having 2 (or more ) guitars.

If I was a byrd, I'd be mighty sore every time they shut the door and I don't think I'd sing...

If I were you I would have a look at the CP Jazzmaster and play it. - See how much of a difference it is to your JMJM.
It might feel similar to play with the same trem position but the neck and the pick ups will be different.
If you liked it and its a straight swop then go for it - The CP Jazzmaster is at least twice the price of a JMJM.
But... as mentioned here already, the MIM classic series is as close to an American Jazzmaster that you can get.

Yes, it doesn't have enough hipster mojo for most of the forumites.ianramos wrote:Is there any reason why the classic player isn't worth it?
I agree with MKR, on a straight up trade, get the CP, it's worth more money and is the better guitar. Plus it has very similar specs to your JMJM, so won't feel completely strange to you.

I would check the cp. If you like it as good as your jmjm, go for it... But don't sell a guitar you like for one you don't know!

It's a lot of hassle but, If you can trade straight across & it's in xlnt condition go for it. Then sell it & get the Lacquer 60's.leokula wrote:Yes, it doesn't have enough hipster mojo for most of the forumites.ianramos wrote:Is there any reason why the classic player isn't worth it?

The Lacquer 60's has Fender USA AV65 Pickups. Xlnt Materials & build quality. It's as close as you can get to an AV65, which is the Top Of The Line, for 1/3 the money. It also comes with a Hard Case.

Re: Should I keep my J Mascis or get a different Jazzmaster?
My impression has always been that the pickups of the J Mascis and the CP and basically identical (very p90). And, I don't like them. That being said, I own a Classic Player that has the av65 pickups on it, and I won't get rid of it easily.
If I were buying now and could not afford American Vintage reissues, I'd probably look for a gently used Troy Van Leuwen. It has all the classic specs, including locking tremolo (unlike the road worn and classic 60's -I like both of these too-), and block inlays and binding. Also Av65 pickups and awesome looks.
