Re: Hankering after a "Pawn Shop" Mustang Special
People sometimes lose their minds during auctions... $400 sounds a very decent price! Seems the going rate in the U.K. Is between £400 and just over £500... Given how much it is going to cost to import even an MG69 I may as well hold out for one to appear here

I love pretty much all the Pawn Shop series guitars. I wish they would have stuck around longer

I have passed twice really great opportunities to get a pawn shop mustang, and I kind of regret it. The second one was a mij, gorgeous blue metallic in a perfect shape. I like their body shape a lot.

Re: Hankering after a "Pawn Shop" Mustang Special
Cost a bit more than I originally budgeted (over £500), however it has not been played in anger. It still had it's plastic film on the pickguard, so a virtually new guitar that has been kept hidden away since 2011. No fret wear, no marks, spotless
At some point I am going to be tempted to do the bridge mod on it...

Congrats! Best colour too! If you ever decide to upgrade those mini wide ranges both Novak and Creamery in the UK do correctly built versions.

@Johnny Burrito, switching options, according to a few demos online, are really great. The three way toggle pickups selector works obviously just like in a jazzmaster. The slider switches allow you to select humbucker (middle), bridge single coil, or neck single coil. Crazy versatile, especially when both pickups are selected and you play around with slider switches.
The pickups are something Fender called Enforcer, not Atomic as mentioned above.
Does anyone know if there are any differences between the MIJ and MIM models?

The MIM ones have the truss rod adjustment at the headstock and a more satiny finish on the neck. Not sure if there are any other differences.

Re: Hankering after a "Pawn Shop" Mustang Special
I just got one of these (MIJ) in red and really like how it feels. Great neck, super resonant and an amazing weight. I got it, in theory, for my 7.5 year old son who'll be able to start up on guitar before too long. I feel like the size isn't too far off, but in the meantime, I can maybe use it and fix it up a little.
I think I may swap out the bridge with a Toronado bridge, which looks to be an easy enough change with some nice aesthetic and functional improvement. The pickups seem low to me at the moment, so I'm not going to make any decisions about those until I can play around some more with them after I get it setup better.
Has anyone done a pickup swap in these yet? It should just require a 4-conductor pickup and an extra hole through the guard for a centered screwed for the bass-side pickup screw, yes? I'd be curious to hear about how different pickups sound in it. I've been reading several different threads on the subject of the guitar and some thoughts of swaps were the Frailin Twangbucker or the Unbucker, which would cover more traditional HB sounds and also a nice single-coil sound.
An interesting note on the red finish... Mine's been played quite a bit and has some dings here and there. Under one, I can see a gold finish underneath, which looks awesome. Overall, the red is less red to my eye and leaning more in the reddish-purple family, which is cool. Regardless, it was too good of a guitar to pass up for the price.
I'd love for there to be an on-going thread about these on the forum. It's such a cool little guitar and the old threads on the subject were really negative. It's a shame. I feel like they did a great job making a guitar that feels like a whole, well thought out instrument.
